Other than training on the contents of this letter, our plant pipefitters and machinists did not receive any asbestos specific training. However, all maintenance craftsmen were instructed not to handle or come into contact with anything suspected of containing asbestos. They have been instructed to call the insulator shop where a well trained individual could handle the situation appropriately. She has worked very closely with our plant Asbestos policies and has a very good understand of what the requirements are and how we have elected to meet these requirements. The Carpenter Safety Team will address this issue during their regular Wednesday meeting times. Along with the aid of Mr. Jim Barnes, our asbestos specialist, they will formulate a proposal to remedy this potential problem. Vega Subject: Asbestos Gasket Disposal There is still a strong concern about asbestos gaskets and the proper disposal of them after being used. Asbestos gaskets must be handled as asbestos and disposed of properly. It is recommended that while and after removal they be kept wet with water or a light oil, if applicable. Metal surfaced gaskets can be scraped with a proper tool if kept wet. Do not use a buffer or brush. Asbestos bags are available at the Insulation Shop and the Shift Foreman's office. Place any asbestos gaskets or any gaskets that you suspect as asbestos in these marked bags. Deliver the discarded gaskets to the Insulation Shop for proper disposal. If transportation is not available, call the Insulation Shop, Ext. 4323 or 6270, with directions, and someone will pick them up.
