Area concentrations of airborne asbestos fibers were measured too. The maintenance activities included cleaning the brake shoes and drums on a van, installing new brake shoes on a forklift and cleaning the drums and brake shoes on a flatbed truck. In order to minimize asbestos fiber generation, Varsol was applied to the brakes during maintenance. In addition, one of the mechanics wore a respirator while servicing the van and the forklift. The other mechanic used no personal protection while working on the flatbed truck. All of the work was performed inside the garage. AU399 UCC 008978 Union Carbide Agricultural Products Company, Inc. Institute Plant I N D U S T RIAL HYGIENE SAMPLING RESULTS The 8-hour time-weighted average exposures for the two mechanics were well below the permissible exposure limit and the action level (i.e., less than one-half the PEL). In addition, two area samples taken in close proximity to the brake maintenance work areas were below the action level. A third area sample, taken in the vicinity of the new brake pad storage area, was well below the action level. Currently, no action is required except that these results must be reviewed with all affected employees (i.e., any auto mechanics who may perform brake maintenance). In lieu of reviewing this, a copy of the results may be posted in the garage area where all affected employees can see it.
