Wagner, Dear Sam: I am glad that you called me up about the Miami, Arizona matter. It enabled me to immediately relay it by tele phone to Dr. Kehoe who stated that he would do everything he possibly could to ascertain the present status through Roches ter. It is almost unthinkable that M r . t r o u b l e is attributable to the handling of Ethyl Gasoline when one con- ' siders that thousands of men for several years have been handling much larger quantities and, in some sections, twice th concen tration of lead per gallon of gasoline, without any trouble. It seems incredible that with our record, a man who only handles an average of 500 gallons a month, or, say, 20 gallons a day, could possibly have absorbed a sufficient amount of lead to have brought about a condition similar to that com plained of in connection with Mr. Gilmore. You wen^iiit right in suggesting a quiet investi gation as to previous history, and I think that Mr. Brewster was righ^xr^Sggesting that y o u should not go to Miami as to do so might react unfavorably. Obviously, I am very much interested in hearing the outcome of your investigation, as well as the report from Dr. Kehoe which will probably come in within the next week. Dear Art; Mr. Webb has undoubtedly told you about my tele phone conversation with him this morning, and by this time you have received part of a quotation of a letter written by Mr. Van Horn, local jobber for the Union Oil Co. at Miami, Arizona, to Mr. Earl W. Brewster, district sales manager of the Union Oil Co. in Arizona. I talked with Mr. Brewster over the tdephone, and Mr. Van Horn is making a thorough investigation o f ^ P H H ^ i history, as his occu pation of churn driller suggested that he is a miner and might have sometime recently worked in a lead mine or smelter. Mr. Van Horn is also looking around the service station, and this man's residence to see If there is any lead pipe or any other sources of lead which sight have caused this man to have lead poisoning. In uy conversation with Mr. Brewster, he was of the opinion that my presence in Miami might hurt the cause m re than it would help, as Miami Is a very small place and a visit there might cause people to attach more Importance to this incident than we sight like at this time. Yu Brewster, District Sales Manager, Union Oil Co., for Arizona. The gasoline he speaks of is Union Ethyl gasoline. previous occupation, described in this letter as "cnurn driller" means a man who works in a mine with a hand drill. I have asked Mr. Brewster to make a quiet investigation of this man's previous his tory as I suspect he had probably been engaged in lead mining or around some of the lead smelters at some time. Webb, Ethyl Gasoline Corp., 25 Broadway, Mew York City* Dear Mr* Webb: After our conversation over the telephone in the mat ter of one Miami, Arizona, I gave some thought to %vhether or not I should go to Rochester, and finally decided it would be better policy if I were to write first and. obtain such in formation as was available. I have just received a letter today which I think justifies that course. I am enclosing herewith copy of a letter which I have received from Dr. C. K* Mayturn, of the Mayo Clinic, describing his findings in the case of M r I think this letter answers satisfactorily all the questions that have come up in the case of this man. I have no way of telling from the history which you gave me how he might have been exposed to carbon monoxide, but at least it seems reasonably certain that there is no basis for attributing his condition to the handling of Ethyl Gasoline* The conclusion of Dr. Mayturn is, I think, quite well justified by the mild course of Gilmore's illness. If he had had an encephalitis due to lead it would have run quite a different course and would probably have had a different outcome for the outlook for recovery in these cases, as you know, is none too favorable, and certainly they didfhot recover with the rapidity that this man did. Prom m y point of view, there fore, this would be regarded as a closed case. Since you m ade no reference to the Travelers in con nection with Mr I am assuming that there is no reason for my writing them about this matter. If I am mistaken, however, please let me know and I will communicate directly with Mr* Reid. I am maintaining the original letter of Dr. Mayturn in my file. It was not given to me in strict confidence but I believe it would be good policy not to use the letter itself unless it be comes necessary. I would suggest therefore that whatever communica tion you wish to make from it would be in the form of a quotation in your own words of its contents, without using the letter direct.
