T h i s is a timely report, and we have high hopes that the Research p e o p l e , who have received copies, will appreciate the potential chemical toxicity problems within Wetinghouse. These problems exist in the working environment, in the air exhausted from manufacturing operations, and from our liquid and solid waste materials. For over 40 years, Headquarters Industrial Hygiene and Safety have been following these problems and recommending safe handling procedures when called upon to do so. Now, it is time for these problems to be seriously considered by our R&D personnel, who recommend new chemicals and processes for manufacturing. Following arc a few comments on the contents of the Research Report : 1. Page 6 - Recommendation 1(b) -- The Safe Practice Data Sheets which have been issued in the past few years do have a section on waste disposal, and we will attempt to update some of the older data sheets to include waste disposal. 2. Page 9 - Ta b le 2 -- We were surprised to find that you did rot include .ill the carrcnogons listed in the June 27, 1974 issue o: the ONi'.A Standards. Corporate Standards at the R&D Center is only responsible for the printing and distribution. For many years, Headquarters Industrial Hygiene has attempted to l.cvp abreast of the potentially hazardous materials used in the Corporation. This ve have done through our contacts with the Corporators" Standards Department who notify us of the materials being used by the Divisions. At the present time, there are approximately 20,850 ~ _ materials covered by the Material Code System. Of these, approximately^^ 9,000 are potentially hazardous. This information is given to you so that you can appreciate the scope of the problem of handling potential]^^ hazardous materials and/or chemicals in the Corporation. Zella R.
