Sibley Sufiject Shortsleeve Science Applications Inc., Study of California Asbestos Sources As you may recall, several months ago we supplied Science Applications with some data on asbestos concentrations in the vicinity of our asbestos mine and mill. I contacted Dr. Ziskind to learn the status of their study. Phase I of their contract has been completed and a copy of the report will be mailed to us. Their conclusion was that the population impacted by our operations was too small to be a usable cohort for epi demiological evaluation. Our data also arrived too late to be incorpo rated into the report but have been discussed with EPA and parts will be used in Phase II. This second phase is now underway and consists of a detailed study of the Calavaras region. Dr. Ziskind also informed me that the State has recently received results for water samples from the California aqueduct which show asbestos concentrations up to 1.5 billion fibers per liter. This aqueduct supplies much of Southern California and this story has been in the Los Angeles news papers during last week. Additional samples are now being analyzed by the EPA in Cincinnati. The high concentrations appear to have been caused by the heavy rains and much lower levels are considered to be more typical. It may be appropriate if they have not already done so, for Bill and Glen to familiarize themselves with the situation so that factual answers can be provided for any questions which arise.
