Thanks Sally et: aU I also feel like I am not the right person to talk about society-wide trends. On Joe's second point - in my experience, which is primarily in US regulatory policy and analysis, "facts"/analysis/science have always played somewhat of a subsidiary role to other concerns, and their importance has waxed and waned - varying by policy issue as weil as over time. I agree with a point Terje makes in his slides: this is not necessary a problem, it often reflects (legitimate) disagreements about how to deal with uncertainty as well as value judgments.
I've been working on some slides which i wili send later, and plan to discuss (1) the role of economic analysis in the (U.S.) regulatory decisionmaking process; (2) how judgment permeates the conduct of regulatory analysis and benefit-cost analysis more generally; and (3) some recommendations for what we (SRA and risk analysts more generaily) can do to improve the use and usefulness of analysis. ! also expect to talk for about 10 minutes, if that is OK with you.

Thanks, Sally.
My talk, which should be about 10 minutes long, will address all but one of the questions that Terje originally sent in the plenary abstract:
1. How has the post-truth society (in which objective facts are become less influential in shaping public opinion) been able to develop? o I won't be able to answer this one; it's toofar outside my expertise.
2. Why are "alternative facts" and "fake news" becoming household names? o They've always been there, they simply get updated tables from time-to-time.
3. Has science sought to stretch its domain too widely and denied uncertainties? o No. Andyes.
4. Or, is the truth not comfortable enough for those in power or seeking power? o It has more to do with efficacy and less to do with comfort.
Best, Joe

Attached are some draft slides I am considering. I will essentially focus on how the new TSCA statute requires a transparent accounting of uncertainties in our risk evaluations.

I have simplified my slides and message a little - see e.g. slide 7 leading to two key questions.
