Purpose of Test:
1. To determine the maximum, ratio controller setting - slurry feed rate before pulsation - at various atomizing steam pressures with:
a. Three different diameter nozzles (N^, N2, No = 0.37", 0.50", 0.75,s respectively).
b. Two different nozzle arrangements - with and without the disperser disc (Nw, Nw/0).
c. Two different viscosity feeds (Vls V2 @^15,000 cps and500 cps, respectively).
d. Three different slurry tube chamber diameters (ST^, ST2, STo @ 1", 1/2" and 1/4" respectively). See attached Figure 1.
2. To determine the effect of steam pressure, slurry viscosity, nozzle dimensions, and slurry feed rates on the product particle size distribution.
3. To determine the effect of particle size distribution and dust grain loading on the efficiency of the Aerodyne dust collector at a ratio of secondary to primary blower air equal to 0.70.
Test Details:
. An outline of the test is shown on the attached Table I.
. A schematic diagram of the test procedure is shown on the attached Figure 2 and a flow chart is presented in Figure 3.

Test Procedure:
1. Determine the steam flow rate (lb steam/hr) versus the atomizing steam pressure (AP steam) at each 25 psig, without any feed flow. Repeat this step for each nozzle, with and without the disperser. A series of graphs similar to Pig. b will be developed.
2. Start the run with the following initial conditions:
AP Steam = l60 psig (Maximum) Ratio Setting =0.3 (Minimum)
T0ut = 200P
Adjust outlet temperature so as to maintain the remaining product moisture between 3 and 6%.
PH-11 draft control should be set at 50%.
cfm secondary air _
cfm primary air
~
This will maintain
Load 1000 lb HgO to scrubber hold tank.
3. Start slowly increasing the ratio controller until pulsations appear in the nozzle.
b. Reduce the steam pressure so as to produce a steam flow reduction of the following magnitude:
Ratio Setting
0.3 to 1.0 1.0 to 1.5 1.5 up to 3.0
Resulting Steam Plow Reduction (lb steam/hr)
-- 8oo
^ 200 -100
5. Once the nozzle is stabilized out (^10 min. will be required after each change in setting) at the lower pressure, slowly start increasing the ratio setting to establish the new pulsation point.
Note:
A lb oz; sample of the product should be taken after each setting adjustment. Particle size distribution and % moisture will be determined. A 4 oz sample of

the scrubber solution should be taken after each change in setting. % solids will be determined.
Label both: Test ____, P Steam = _____ , Ratio Setting = __
6. Repeat Steps 4 & 5 until the atomization steam pressure is so low that atomization failure will occur.
7. As shown on the attached test sequence Table I, the next step is to remove the distributor disc from the nozzle and repeat Steps (2) to (6), using the same feed line and nozzle diameters, and the same viscosity feed.
8. Follow the above described procedure for the other test outlined in the Test Sequence Table I.
The following data should be recorded:

9. After completing test number 6, it will be necessary to repeat Tests 1-6 with V2 = 500 cps (50$ solids). The dry Amisol pre pared in Tests 1-6 will be used to prepare this slurry.
Determine the quantity and $ solids of the Amisol slurry in the feed tank. The amount of spray dried Amisol and water to add to bring the contents to 500 cps and 20,000 lbs is calculated as follows:
lb Amisol = (10,000 - SxQ)/D 100
lb H20 = 20,000 - (Q + lb Amisol)
where S = $ solids of Amisol slurry. Q = Quantity of Amisol slurry in tank. D = Average $ solids of dry Amisol product produced in Tests 1-6.
10. Continue Tests 6-12 as described in the Test Sequence Table I.
NOTE:
SINCE THIS TA IS EXPLORATORY IN NATURE, THE TEST SEQUENCE GIVEN HERE SHOULD ONLY SERVE AS A GUIDELINE AND PROPER JUDGMENT SHOULD BE USED TO MODIFY IT AFTER INITIAL DATA IS ANALYZED. HOWEVER, THE TEST PROCEDURE SHOULD BE FOLLOWED AS OUTLINED HERE.
