Company Ownership: Panhandle Milling purchased the facility in April 2018. The facility was previously owned by McShares, Inc. Process Description: Viobin produces wheat germ oil and defatted wheat germ products. Production starts with the delivery of wheat germ from flour mills. The wheat germ is blended and then sent to one of two extractors. The facility refers to the two extractors as the "batch extractor" and the "crown extractor". The facility does not operate both extractors simultaneously. The batch extractor has two tanks that are filled with wheat genn and then hexane is pumped through the tanks. The hexane extracts the oil from the wheat germ. The two tanks are operated as two separate batch units. At the crown extractor the wheat gem1 is passed through a pool of hexane that extracts the oil. The hexane that has come into contact with the wheat germ now includes the wheat germ oil and is referred to as miscella. The miscella is sent to a still to separate the oil and the hexane using heat. The oil is then sent to storage tanks. The wheat germ flour that has come into contact with hexane is referred to as defatted germ. The defatted germ leaves the extractor and moves to a toaster unit that removes excess hexane. The defatted germ then moves to a cooler to reduce the temperature of the material prior to handling. Staff Interview: The facility controls hexane emissions with condensers, mineral oil scrubbers, and a carbon absorber bed system. The facility's products have applications in the human food, animal feed, and pharmaceutical industries. TOUR INFORMATION EPA toured the facility: Yes Data Collected and Observations: The facility was not in operation on the day of the inspection; however, EPA walked through the facility from flour mixing through extraction and final storage of oil.
