460.0 - Safety - Asbestos Medical Surveillance July y , 1992 Mr. Victor Crawley, Vice President District 6, CWA 2334 Olive Street St. Louis, MO 63103 Dear Mr. Crawley: This is in response to your attached request for copies of test results due to asbestos related medical surveillance. Southwestern Bell does not have any employees under medical surveillance as a result of exposure to asbestos. This is in compliance with the OSHA asbestos standard and our own Company practice which stipulates the requirements for medical surveillance. The OSHA asbestos standard requires medical surveillance for all employees engaged in work involving levels of asbestos at or above the action level of the standard for 30 or more days per year, or who are required to wear negative pressure respirators. Our Company practice regarding asbestos related work activity was developed to prevent employees from becoming exposed over the action level and none of our employees are required to wear negative pressure respirators. If you have any other questions regarding this information, please contact Greg Williams on 331-1904. Very truly yours. ) Sgd Gy Luois Assistant Vice President Attachment CC: Div. Mgr.-Lbr. Nicnots Executive Vice President June 11, 1992 To: CWA Vice Presidents Subject: Asbestos Medical Surveillance Dear Colleagues: Recently, I have learned that telecommunications companies with which CWA has a collective bargaining relationship have been conducting asbestos medical surveillance among union-represented workers. As you know, the union is most concerned with member exposure to asbestos and related medical problems. In fact, we recently completed a medical surveillance program involving craft workers employed by Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone. With this in mind, I would appreciate it if you would request from all telecommunications companies with which your office has a contractual relationship copies of test results from such testing. To ensure confidentiality, aggregate medical results absent individual name identifiers should be requested. Please send this information to David LeGrande CWA Occupational Safety and Health Coordinator. In Unity M. E.
