Boudreau Dear Jims While talking to Mao Houston of United Refining Co. yesterday, he inquired as to whether or not a certain employee of theirs could have contract ed lead poisoning. This employee works in their refinery, however has nothing to do with leaded gasoline there. He happens to own an automobile of Several years back equipped with the bid style vacuum tank. The vacuum has not been functioning properly for some time, so the owner found it necessary to disconnect the fuel line leading to the rear tank on the car. Then with his mouth he sucked gasoline through, thus creating a partial syphon action which was sufficient to get the engine started# I understand he performed this operation every time he started the car averaging once a day or every two days This went along for about two weeks when the man was taken ill with indigestion the day before Hew Years Day and had to go to bed. The m a n also complained of pains in his chest but otherwise was apparently normal. The employee used United's Q gasoline and has been using it right along. This Q gasoline runs close to 1.5cc of lead per gallon. Undoubtedly the man got gasoline into his mouth but I wonder whether there would be enough lead present to give him any trouble. Mac Houston asked my opinion as to whether or not the man could have lead poisoning, in reply to which I stated he probably did not, although I could not be positive* I offered our assistance but Mac did not consider it necessary unless the man got worse, However, I wish to report the case to you even though United did not think it necessary. We obviously are not at fault and the employee may recover quickly, but nevertheless our medical department may wish additional information or may even wish to see the man.
