BERLIN - DUST CONDITIONS
/
t
Sam Thomas and Dr. Jon Konzen advised me of the recent neighborhood complaint made to New Jersey State officials related to emission of dust, including asbestos, from the Berlin plant. Also, Harsh Burch mentioned the current complaint within the plant related to dust conditions.
Dr. Irving J. Selikoff is extremely active, especially in the state of New Jersey, in his campaign against all asbestos dust. Re would like nothing better than to gi|e adverse publicity to OCF, the same as has been the case with Johns-Manville.
To date we have been relatively successful in confining the problem to applicators of products containing asbestos. The seriousness of this situation cannot be overemphasized.
It is my recommendation that:
1. Paul Scheuerle, Dr. Konzen, and Sam Thomas act promptly on the current complaints from outside and within the plant. I will furnish Paul with a "position statement" that will be helpful, (Because of the low percentage content of asbestos in Kaylo, personal discussions should refer to "general dust conditions" and minimize the emphasis on the asbestos content.)
2. To as great a degree as is possible, control current dust problems with present equipment and methods available.
3. Sam Thomas make firm recommendation on additional control equipment required (i.e., scrubbing system), based on the results of dust samplings; and installation be made prior to year-end to correct the current problems inside and adjacent to the plant.
