(2) Government Contacts - In continuation of our efforts on
behalf of members using the drawback vc attempted to procure
a nodification of a ruling by the Customs Bureau which cur
tailed the length of time the drawback night be used, the
Bureau contending that the drawback period should run froa
the tlDe ore, concentrates, or crude bullion is received at
a bonded smelter, we contending it to run from the tine the
: merchantable pig lead is withdrawn froa bond. Although we

believe that the ruling of the Bureau eight be upset by
O Court action we felt it would be wisest to forego tho expense of litigation, making the necessary industrial adjustments in
conformity with the Bureau's regulation.
We aucecedcd in procuring an addition to tho speci fications of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury Deoartnent permitting the use of lead-covered ekylights in Gov-rnrent work. Incidentally, it ia alco noteworthy that hard lead is
now a permleelble Government material for ell architectural
cheet metal.
The constant revision of plucblng codes in the United States makes it neeesoary for us to keep in touch with the situation in thacc cities where revision any affect our in
t terests. Washington, D. C, has been revising its code for the past year and because of h p* trouble locally with lead pipe, which we investigated thoroughly, the continued uss of our metal was questioned. I am pleased to report that as a result of cur efforts the new Vashlngton code will specify lead serv
ice pipe in the Lead Industries Association stardarl throughout.
(3) Standardisation - Our experience in Washington, D. C. in
dicated that the pipe sites ueod by the trade hao not been
established with an eye to uniformity end sometimes led to an

Thus, with tho coopera tion of tho lead pipe fabricators a ncr act of standards was prepurod based upon laboratory research into the creep strength of lead, research which shored that the constants generally used to design lead pipe and probably tithor products were in correct* The new standard was adopted, on January 28, 1982.
(4) Fducatlcnal Activities - The book. 'Useful Information About Lead* appeared last 8ur"er and has hed an extremely gratifying reception among architects, plunbere, englnesrs end. othere nationally and internationally. Unsolicited com ment from some recipient* of the books shows a real need for helpful data about <" products.
Our bulletin 'Lead* hee gradually grown in circula tion and in influence, we believe. 7c have tried to conflno its contents to articles of timely significance and practical valuu to readers. It has helped to sell lead.
In view of the limited funds at our disposal to ipend, on educational work we have, in part, used the techni cal preea to spread information about lead. Article* repreeenting eoneiderable etudy end of practical value to user* of lead product* have been published. For example, a paper of curs in the SrIaKT IPTAL '''OFKFH described the proper methods for shielding I-ray apparatus in hospitals, another described lead spandrels, another in 'Domeotic Fnglneering* discussed waterproofing with lead. Considering the ereat amount of publicity given to competitive non-ferrous metals our efforts seen email but even eo I believe they arc helping in estab lishing much good will for lead, "e have contributed chapters to text books treating the subject of tbs lead Industries, among other things, and are almost constantly at work on some educational literature. Woreovtr, our publications hare aroused a stream of Inquiries for assistance on lead problems that require considerable time to answer. The diversity of interest is illustrated by tho variety of subjects covered in these inquiries, such as vibration insulation, roofing and flashing, ornamental design, waterproofing, painting of bridyis, houses and water tank*, lerd burning, resistance to certain corrosive chemicals, properties of lead and its alloys, and other subjects too numerous to mention. le are also frequent ly asked to refer our correspondents to emnufacturers of var ious lead products.
To spread information about the advantages of load pipe`for water oervieos in comparison with competitive mater ials, we published a mlmeagr-athcd summary for distribution to consumers. JOttr* copies hare been furnished many members for their own purposes. The total circulation will be about 13,900.
Ye expect to publish a general booklet on lead pipe, to be profusely illustrated and which will clrculato among water works engineers, cheslcal engineers, plumbers and others.

Subsequently we propose to publish an Informative booklet on sheet lead,
(6) Technical Research - During 1931 the Bureau of Standards reported upon the results obtained from Inspection of the first series of pipe specimens burled on behalf of the Ameri can On.s Association In a competitive test Of pipe coatings. Our entry in this test, It may be recalled, was red lead baked upon the pipe as a priming coat and then covered with other material. The Bureau's examination of competitive specimens of coatod pipe that had been burled about eight months shows that red lead gave an excellent account of Itself, but It is too early to state definitely what conclusions will finally be reached after several mere years of test.
Through the kindness of one momber we were able to supply some lead foil to be used experimentally by the Texas Company and the Gulf Oil Company for wrapping pipe lines sub ject to soil corrosion. The result of this experimental work will also have to wait the outcome of field experience for a yoar or mors.
We have Interested the Oeneral' Klectrle Company in undertaking some experimental wo. * upon the properties of load-aabestoa anti-vibretion pads.
(ft) Vedleal Research - Te have continued to support the reecarch of Lr. Aub and associates at Harvard College on load poisoning - a matter of deep interest to us and to tetter understanding of which Dr. AUb has already contributed much enllghtenrnt. Our appropriation win carry the work to about fall of 1932.
(7) miscellaneous - In an endeavor to correct misinformation conci'lcrxble time was spent Ir.v'eti gating several outbursts of anti-lead publicity relating to poisoning of infants and others. Our welfare work has brought us in contact with ths TJ. S. Public Health Service, N.T. State Department of Labor. It should ultimately help to dispel much of the unrarranted prejudice against some lead products.
The manufacturers of lead pigments in the Ldad Industries Association, as a protection to tha public, have expressed themselves as opposed to the shipment of lead pro ducts in paper bags.
