Soft-seal valves (such as ball, soft seal gate, and plug valves) shall be provided with pressure relief for bodv cavities, to the upstream side, when specified, if cool liquids can warm, expand and build up pressure in the body cavity.
4.19.C* Stem packing shall be braided or woven asbestos impregnated with 35% (Add) teflon by weight and employing a corrosion inhibitor.
4.26.e Where butterfly valves are used adjacent to process equipment that
(Add) requires depressuring and removal for maintenance or other purposes, the
valves shall be of the tapped lug type capable of holding line pressure
on the side away from the process equipment while the process equipment
is depressured and removed from service.

All low alloy valve castings in hydrogen service with a hydrogen partial pressure above 100 psia shall be 100% magnetic particle and radiographically examined. Radiographic quality shall be determined per ASTM E 71. Acceptances shall be based on the severity levels indicated in the following: (Table for paragraph 5.1 has not been changed.)
5.1.1 Magnetic particle examination indications shall be judged by ASTM E125 (Add) reference photographs as follows:
a. Type I linear indications are not acceptable.
b. Type II degrees 1 and 2 and Type III degrees 1 and 2 are acceptable
without repair.
. c. Type IV indications are not acceptable.
d. Acceptance of castings indicating Type V degree or greater porosity
shall be based on the results of radiographic examination and :
severity levels described herein.

5.1.2 Radiographic quality level shall be 2-2T. (Add)
5.2 Valves not covered by other Basic Practices shall be tested per API 598.
(Chg) However, all prototype valves require a high pressure closure test per API 598, par. 4.3.a.3.

Prototype valves. A valve shall be considered a prototype if either:
a. The manufacturer has made any changes to the standard design. b. The manufacturing facility has no previous experience with the

It also covers the design and inspection requirements of valves that are not covered by other Basic Practices. An^steriricf*} indicates that additional information is required. Single or double block valve rating. Block valves shall be suitable for the more severe line classification on either side of
the block(s) valve installation.

Block valves of the gate type (except for the soft seal type, and those covered by par. 4.8) used for onstream isolation of equipment and instruments and to prevent contamination shall be of the following types:
a. ANSI 150 lb rating. Gate valves shall be solid wedge or flexible wedge type, with Stellite No. 6 seats.
b. ANSI 300 lb through 600 lb ratings. Gate valves shall be of the flexible wedge, split wedge, or double disc type. Valves 2 in. and smaller may be of the solid wedge type. All valves shall have Stellite No. 6 seats.
4.8 . Block valves for segregation for safety of. materials, which could result in an explosive mixture, such as cyclic power \ former reaction and regeneration valves, shall meet the following requirements:
* a. Valves shall be gate valves of the double disc, flexible wedge, or split wedge type. Valves 2 in.- and smaller may be of
the solid wedge type.

b. Wedge and body seats shall have Stellite No. 6 hard face trim.

c. Valves cycling 10 times or more a year shall have wedge guides or body guides hard faced with Stellite No. 6.

Nodular iron venturi gate valves shall be per API 604 (nodular iron valves) except as modified in this Basic Practice.
Valve dimensions associated with the reduced seat, such as stem diameter and stuffing box diameter, shall be for the seat size. The face-to-face dimension shall be that for corresponding full port valves.
Valves for use with standard wall pipe which have seats of only one size reduction below flange size may be used. These valves shall have a section modulus at.their minimum cross-section (excluding ribs and bosses) equal to, or more than, the section modulus of the nominal pipe size.

Valves for use with pipe heavier than standard wall pipe, or of more than one size reduction of the seat, may be used. The stress range in the valve due to bending and torsional moments imposed on the valve by piping flexibility considera- tions shall be calculated using the section modulus at the minimum cross-section of the valve (excluding ribs and bosses).
The stress range calculated per par. 4.24 shall not exceed the allowable stress range for the valve material. The need for
anchors or guides to minimize strain accumulation shall be investigated.

BUTTERFLY VALVES FOR WATER SERVICE

4.26 * Rubber lining of valve bodies for corrosive or high throttling service shall be as follows:
a. The wetted surfaces of the valve bodies shall be fully lined with natural rubber for fluids not contaminated by
hydrocarbons, and with Buna-N rubber where such contamination is possible.

b. For flanged valves, the rubber lining shall extend across the full flange feces.

c. The rubber lining shall be 100% bonded to the body and the seat Lining-to-body bond shall meet the AWWA C 504 seat-to-body bond requirements. Lining-to-seat bond shall be capable of withstanding a 160 psi tensile load.
d. All seat inserts shall be Buna-N rubber.

4.1 If body is an austenitic stainless steel, all other valve components except (Chg) handwheels, shall be of the same nominal chemistry as the body.

5.1 Valves shall be per API 600 and the additional requirements of this Basic Practice.
5.2 * Valves shall have flanged ends and shall be OS&Y (outside screw and yoke). Deviations from these requirements, if any,
shall be specified.

5.3 Gate shall be solid wedge -- plain or flexible type, unless the split wedge or double-disc parallel seat type is specified.

Wear travel shall not be less than that required per API 603, par. 2.3h.
The seal width shall be 0.094 to 0.250 in. The total metal seat outside the seal shall be no less than the width of the soft seal.
The soft seal shall be designed to withstand a minimum of 2000 cycles of operation at seal rated pressure, without damage or indications of cold flow, as evidenced by spreading over the metal seat.
The valve shall provide seat tightness with the body bleed open, without any leakage, and at any pressure within and equal to the valve seal rating.

Low pressure seat tests shall be conducted with the air discharge slightly below a water surface to facilitate determination
of leakage rates.

If a body bleed is specified in location G or H (ANSI B16.5) the test procedure shall be per API 598 par. 4.3.a.3. For
valves without body bleeds the test procedure shall be per API 598 par. 4.3.a.1.

Additional requirements for Soft Seal Valves. The high pressure closure test shall be performed with water at a pressure
not less than the valve seal pressure rating at 100F. No leakage is permitted on either the high pressure closure test or
the low pressure seat test

Closure torque during test. For handwheel and gear operated valves, closure torque shall not be greater than that attain
able by hand-tightening. For motor operated valves, tests shall be conducted with stem closure torque not exceeding
design closure torque.

PREPARATION FOR SHIPMENT
A protective coating shall be applied to all valves, using either of the methods outlined in par. 7.2 or 7.3.
Painting of exterior surfaces of valves shall be as follows: a. Unmachined exterior surfaces shall be per manufacturer's standard.

b. Machined or threaded surfaces subject to atmospheric corrosion during shipment or subsequent storage shall be coated
with a rust preventive such as Humble's Rust-Ban 385 (or equivalent), which is easily removable with a petroleum
solvent such as Varsol.

7.3 Zinc-phosphate treatment of valves shall be as follows:
a. Unmachined exterior and machined or threaded surfaces shall be zinc-phosphate treated per M1L-P-16232D, Type Z,
. Class 1. The weight of the phosphate shall be 1000 to 1200 mg per sq ft (0.0002 to 0.0003 in. thick).

b. Treated surfaces shall then be coated with a rust preventive such as Humble's Rust-Ban 385 (or equivalent), which is easily removable with a petroleum solvent such as Varsol prior to final painting.

b. Where a pressure temperature rating greater than 150 lb. is specified, valves shall be supplied to API 600. Valves constructed of nickel alloys not covered by ANSI B16.5-1968 shall have pressure temperature ratings per ANSI B16.5-1961.

7.1a Painting of unmachined exterior surfaces shall be per manufacturer's standard, except that red or near-red handwheels are not acceptable.
7.2 Ready identification shall be provided as follows, in addition to (Add) any other standard markings:
a. One end of all valves shall be color coded with a 1/2 in. wide stripe per BRES 18-50-1.IB.
b. Valves shall have Owner's specified code number (e.g. V) clearly stamped with a metal stencil on the valve body in 3/8 in. high letters.
