Pumpman & Mechanic Cont:
In Addition to the work listed herein both the Pumpman and Mechanic where involved in the following work.
Trimmed vessel by the head to permit removal of propeller and drawing of shaft. Trimmed vessel by the stem upon completion of above for work on bow thruster tunnel. Trimmed vessel for DryDock antry. Tested all cargo lines prior to repairs and upon completion of same. Tested all cargo pumps upon completion of repatrg after plant was activated. Tested all deck machinery upon completion of repairs and plant was on the line.
The Pumpman was Mr Alonzo B Beever, The mechanic was Mr JosepH L Padelsky, both these men where assigned to the yard period in 1973, when similar work was performed during the next two years there was no valve failures ( Except Skin Valves which was shipyard defect) nor any stiff valves.
We cannot recommend to highly the retaining assigned to this unit these two men whose work is excellent and their dedication to the job and the ship beyond compare.
We thank Mr McEwan for not changing the personnel assigned during the shipyard period, which allowed with the personnel assigned to complete in the man hours available, at least twice the work that could have been accomplished at sea during the same period stemming from concentration of effort and teamwork, not withstanding performing work without hindrance to normal operations such as Stewards department spaces', as well as Scaling priming and painting bridge wings which can best be. done in port, we expect these bridge wings not requiring further painting until the next yard period in 1977.
We also retained the Second mate and two Third Mates namely messrs Paul Genest, William Grei and Mike Sharik 111. These men where extremely helpfull, for security reason, inspection of tanks and safety reason being on watch when ever the shipyard had workers on duty.
The retaing of Mr Tyrrell who was more responsible than any other person for the preparation of the repairs involved in the deck department,as well as. the supervision, and preparation of the work list for the ships force proved beyond a doubt a necessity. The sucess of the entir operation was dependent upon his presence and superb supervision.
We cannot commend too highly the efforts , cooperation and help rendered by Mr Alton Bums the repair inspector assigned this vessel. His background with the Newportnews Shipyard was instrumental in getting the best supervisors assigned startin^with Mr Beirt Menton, the supervisory personnel of this yard was above average, however the workers and their work leaves much to be desired, their appears to he complete apathy and lack of professional pride in their work, requiring constant supervimson.
We have a general knowledge of the money involved retaining shipboard personnel, as well as
comparitive figures where the work performed by yard personnelX notwithstanding the quality
of the work and would appreciate your views on this matter and; the cost differential.

necessitating dropping water level* repairing leaks and retesting until tanks where completly filled and proven tight. One leak, found behind resistor bank of forced draft fans caused plant shutdown to effect repaid 43. When vessel, was ballasted sufficiently to submerge overboard discharge an inspection disclosed a broken vent nipple* Another shutdown was reguii to effect repairs. 44. Reverse current relay repeatedly tripped main generator off the line* After renewal of relay and adjustment same condition persisted* Mr Loren McConnel of NORTECH MARINE INC* found that the problem was a malfunction in
the Kilowatt meter which is tied into the circuit by Newport News desigi Kilowatt meter was removed from the line repaired and reinstalled. Testing under all load conditions proved satisfactory. 45. Foam System: Upon arrival at the shipyard on ist April the shipyard took two samples which where inadvertenly misplaced never reaching the lab* Two weeks passed and the yard took two more samples which failed to pass the lab test. Mr Clyde C O'Neal contention was that the foam was good* he therefc took two more samples one from each tank personaly on 24th April, Mr Altc Burns delivered same to the airport to be airshipped to the lab. These proved to be on test to the satisfaction of all concerned. This action saved us from replacing 1,000 gallons of foam.
In closing having concluded satisfactorily a 24 hour full speed trial bears c the excellence of the work performed by the engine personnel. No malfunction of any equipment repaired or valves repacked where found. The Persons involved in addition to the signees included Messrs Buck, Cross who was releived by Mr McCracken Third Assistants?
