Thompson:- On July 24th you sent mo a letter suggesting the consideration of a renewal of your appropriation covering the work on lead poisoning. As wo understood originally that our s investigation was to continue only for throe years, all the active workers upon the staff have taken other positions. I think that this was proper, as the problems which w outlined as important have largely bean investigated* As always in such a study, however, many other problems have already suggested themselves and others Will develop in the next few years. It continuation of a formal investigation would seem to ne to be unwarranted, but it would be very satisfactory to have a small fund available (say $5,000*) to use as opportunities arlao for the study of interosting problems allied to lead poisoning. Such investigations might Include further study of in organic salt metabolism, or 'the treftt&aofcfc&f load similar subjects. This would be impossible ftsid&iwerc - t^is.V(\i j vailable. If the Load Institute eared to establish such a fund it would be preferable to have it considered a continuation of Dr* G* W. Thompson, p. 2, the lead fund under similar direction to be used whenever the coonsi on arose without restriction to a definite length of time. It should, of course, be donated to the Medical School. Dean. Edsall ha3 implied that this arrangement would probably be acceptable. If you desire, I think an arrangement could doubtless be made, so that at the end of a given period whatever s u e remained unexpended oould be refunded to the Lead Institute. At present our finanoial outlook indicates that ;there may b a balance of approximately on thousand dollars left from the funds for this year, but an accurate statement cannot be given be* cause of expenses of publication* purchase of reprints, etc.. It would be very desirable if this could also be used for further inci dental investigation as outlined above. It is a great pleasure to bo able to state that no on connected with tho Lead Institute lias in any way tried to influence our investigations, conclusions, or publications. Our problems have proved very interesting, and wo hove boon able to learn many nowfacts. I am mailing under separate cover tho third lead Report to the Institute with two oopiefi of each of th reprints which we have received. Those from the last issue of tho Journal of Industrial Hygiene and of the Journal of the American Medical Association have not yet been delivered.
