Gasketing
An order has been received from victor Gasket for acrylonitrile latexasbestos gasketing sheet. At the time this is produced, a series of rolls of various calipers will he made for sample purposes.
Asbestos Millboard
A successful run of Crocidolite asbestos millboard, designed for high temperature service in glass industry conveyor rolls, was made and Lehr discs are being cut to fill a PPG trial order.
Snecial asbestos millboard for use in toasters failed thirty-day, in-service tests at Proctor - Silex. The samples bowed beyond the permissible curvature which was an unspecified requirement. Analysis will be made of material being returned to determine if the de ficiency can be overcome.
B. Asbestos Flooring Felt
A repeat run of asbestos flooring felt was made at Erie using TCD carboxylated SBR latex, 400-76E. A total of twelve rolls (approxi mately IB tons) were obtained. Operations proceeded very well and difficulties experienced in the previous trial were overcome. Physical properties of the sheet are superior to the current flooring felt and the rolls have been shipped to Whitehall for evaluation. An extended production run is now being planned. Success in this program is very important for several reasons. Savings by conversion to this latex is estimated to be approximately $235,000 per year. This excludes the advantage of less labor by elimination of handling five ingredients in the present formulation. The stock is alkaline as opposed to the acidic system currently employed. This will permit the use of black iron instead of stainless steel in the stock system of the new felt mill at Whitehall. Further experimentation is expected to confirm that the white water in the new formulation can be reused. This will greatly simplify the water effluent prob lem or treatment required in the new installation.
An extended run of flooring felt has been made at Erie using Carey 7M-5 asbestos in place of J-M fiber. At 100% and a 50-50 blend there is an unacceptable reduction in tensile and tear strength. The yield was also lower due to greater losses from higher white water solids. It is estimated that use of the Carey fiber would increase costs $16.00/ton.
C. Automotive
A plant trial run of a moldable mastic sound deadening formulation has been made successfully using existing Joliet production equip ment. Sheets were taken to an outside vacuum forming company to
