CUNNINGHAM AMIS PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT AL-1728 1989 May 2 RE; Asbestos Recommendations - Alcoa's AMIS Maintenance Thank you for allowing me to get a good look at the ACM in AMIS areas of Allegheny Center. The bulk samples which were collected are now being analyzed and you will receive a copy of the results. Now that there is a survey available from Schneider Engineering, it is recommended that you establish some policies for dealing with the presence of asbestos in the AMIS facility. 1. All maintenance persons, contractors and anyone else who may have access to ACM in the AMIS occupied areas of 2 Allegheny center should be informed of the presence of asbestos. 2. ACM removal work should be done with the knowledge and approval of the building owner as specified in Alcoa's lease agreement. 3. All ACM removal work must be done in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations. Allegheny County rules require notification under subsection 1001.08 even for removal of small quantities of friable asbestos containing material (FACM). This is more stringent than the EPA NESHAPS notification requirement. While Allegheny Co. regulations wouldn't require removal of small amounts of asbestos (< 40 meters or < 7.5 sq. meters) to be done by licenced asbestos removal contractors, it would be prudent to go ahead ask Procurement to help you identify a reputable local asbestos contractor who has trained and properly equipped people to do this work. The type of small jobs to which I am referring include removal of small amounts of fireproofing from I beams to install clips and other similar operations done as part of running wires above the suspended ceiling. 4. Purchase a HEPA vacuum to use for clean-up of ceiling tiles where there is evidence of dislodged asbestos fireproofing in conjunction with any work above the dropped ceiling.
