RE: Interview Request - Child Farmworkers & EPA pesticide evaluation
Kiana, for attribution to "an EPA spokesperson," please:
EPA has started a process to consider the minimum age requirements in the Certification and Training (C&T) and the Agricultural Worker Protection Standard (WPS). Read more about this in our listserv as well as Federal Register notices for C&T and WPS.

Hi Robert -- deadline for this story is the first of the month in February, so an interview as soon as possible would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again,

pieces have been picked up by local news outlets (The N&O, the Charlotte Observer, etc.) So while I can't say where this will run for certain, it will reach local audiences.
The focus of the piece is an exploration into children working in North Carolina's agriculture industry. We've primarily spoken with blueberry and tobacco farmers, and kids who grew up working in those industries. We're gathering personal narratives -- people's experience working in the industry -- while also presenting the facts around how/why kids get involved in agriculture so young.
Pesticides, and their potential health risks, are one of the major fears that child workers have discussed in our interviews. This is an especially pertinent topic as the EPA initiates a process to revise the minimum age requirements in the Certification of Pesticide Applicators rule. I'm specifically concerned with RUPs, as they are the most toxic pesticides, as far as I understand. In terms of questions, I'm wanting to know more about the conversation around revising the minimum age requirements and the potential benefits/dangers of that -- I've read a good amount on the subject, and I think perspective from the EPA is crucial to understanding the age requirements fully.
Please let me know the best person to talk to, and any availability they might have. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Good afternoon Kiana,
Thanks for reaching out. I see you are - or were - enrolled at UNC. Are you planning to write a piece for the Daily Tar Heel, or for some of the other outlets you've listed on your profile? Also, would you tell me more about the focus of your piece and send some specific questions so we know who to send them to? Are you, for instance, going to focus on pesticides like glyphosate, or others?
Last but not least, what's your deadline and when are you hoping to publish?
Cheers, R.

Subject: Interview Request - Child Farmworkers & EPA pesticide evaluation
Hi Dawn,
My name is Kiana Cole, and I am a journalist out of North Carolina. I am working on a reporting project with a video partner about child labor in agriculture the US, specifically looking at our agriculture industry in NC.
I'm looking to interview a spokesperson for the EPA about the agency's recent announcement that it will be re-evaluating how old a person has to be to handle pesticides, as this is an incredibly pertinent piece of news to our project.
If someone from your office could give me a call - or let me know scheduling
availabilities for an interview - I'd appreciate it. I can be reached at j
