1 TO PILE R. B. Downey 1/7/77 Subject:: Hew Jersey State Action Against 16 Chemicals John Ertel of Pantasote called to ask for our position on the New Jersey situation. I reported that we felt that CIC (ably assisted by DuPont) had the situation well in hand. I recommended that, for further information, he get in touch with George Polzer, Louis Applegate, or Larry Miller (per Bud Lane* memo to MES of the 4th). John Lawrence and Matt Swetonic called late in the day with Lawrence proposing that Harding issue a statement to Nejf Jersey media on behalf of vinyl chloride. The statement would point out that T federal ajiil state VC standards were being met by the industry. I recommended against this action saying that we felt it might confuse the situation. I pointed out that we were content to leave things in the hands of the New Jersey CIC and DuPont for the immediate future. These people have good communication channels into the New Jersey Legislature and are better informed on the situation than we are.
