MEMORANDUM Afternoon of October 12 19^4 Telephone conversation with Up * Ray &oltz, Ethyl Corporation, New York Mr. Goltz stated that he had recently had a phone call from Mr. Lichtenstein, Vice President, Commercial Refining Company^Oil City, Pennsylvania, concerning an employee who. during a .course of treatments several mcmths^^^ror rheumatism in a .western New. York Sanatorium was informed by his physician that he probably had lead poisoning as a result of his occupation* Mr. mpis now seriously ill, and is confined in Franklin Hospital, Franklin, Pennsylvania, under the care of Dr. G. C. McCandless. Mr. Lichtenstein called to determine whether or not lead poisoning could be a factor in the present illness, or was the cause of the former disability. According to his statement Mr.^pHHpls a tank: truck driver, had never been exposed to concentrated fluid, and had never blended ethyl fluid with gasoline or cleaned any tanks which had contained ethyl gasoline. McCandless, 1228 Elk Street, Franklin, Pennsylvania Dr, Me Candles a informed me that Mr, a white man, 25 years old, consulted him recently because of Inability to void. It was necessary to catharise him. Further examination showed that he had serious weakness of his lower extremities and a disturbance of the spinal card or nerve roots of undetermined origin. Dr, McCandless advised Mr, to enter Franklin Hospital for observation and treatment, Examination of the urine disclosed a bladder infection and an examination of the blood revealed h50f000'red blood cells, 85^ hemoglobin, and 2^,000 white blood cells with 85$ polymorphonuclear leucocytes. Dr. McCandless stated that he did not regard lead poisoning as a likely etiologic factor In thi3 case, but would be glad to obtain blood and urine samples for lead determinations.
