A prospective user of transformer aakarel haa drama ary attention to the book 'Transformer Engineering' by L.F. Blums, A. Boyajian, G. Camilli,

shoving that 0.01% of phosggne is produced in an electric arc through air-saturated aakarel at 25C. It was noat disturbing to come across this
information, particularly in a book published by G.E. personnel, sine* this is a variance with reports published in Franca and Germany, in addition to
our own publications.
.
For comparison, I give the cosq>lete table from this book together with 2 other sources on tha subject:-

The following investigators have aought phoagcna but failed to find it:
P. Jay, 'Etuda da la formation da phosg'ene par decomposition dana l'arc electrique daa hydro carbure a chlores 1; Chime at Industrie, Vol. 92, So. 5 (November 1964).
Anon, 'Opinion on the behaviour of clophena in thermic and electrical treatment1; Report from Chemisch-Technische Raichanatalt, Berlin, 21 Kay 1940, Register So. 176/40C.
Both theae inveatigationa used aniline-water saturated with diphenyl urea for detecting the presence of phoagene. I am not an expert in analytical methoda and wonder if thia method ia sufficiently sensitive to detect 0.0l of phoagene among the other dacompoaition products.* Perhaps another investigation using sensitive physical methoda of analysis would be worthwhile, particularly if it could be scrutinized by an impartial observer, from some official organization.
Any background information that you can give us on thia topic and thia G.E. book and its authors would be very welcome.
See you in September when you visit U.E.
. Regards,

COLIN R. COLEMAN
* I hear that there ia a colorimetric method sensitive below 100 ppm.
