A series of chlorinated terphenyls and chloro/bromo biphenyls have been evaluated in polysulfide rubber. The formula used was:
Resin LP-32 Polysulfide Statex R Carbon Black Plasticizer
100 30 } 100 25
Catalyst Lead Dioxide Stearic Acid Santicizer 160

The following materials were screened:
1. Aroclor 5430 (CaO Distilled)
2. Aroclor 5420

4. Aroclor 5025
(Crude)

Results of basic screening are shown in the attached tables.
Conclusions and Recommendations:
1. The chlorinated terphenyls evaluated showed good promise in poly sulfide rubber testing. Physical properties approximated those of Aroclor 1254.

2. Arobroms and bromoclors tested suffered from high volatility when isomerized. Those materials believed to be biodegradable
in general, had higher volatility and were unsatisfactory in mix properties. Higher halogen content gave satisfactory physical performance but the material is not biodegradable
3. It is recommended that the new chlorinated terphenyls be further screened for polysulfide usage but that work on Arobroms or bromoclors in polysulfides be terminated pending receipt of nonisomerized material.
A. Despite their lack of utility in polysulfides, it is recommended that biodegradable arobroms or bromoclors be intensively screened in alternate applications such as flame resistant extender oils in carpet underlay. It is felt that plasticizer applications are available for materials currently under develop ment by fluids and that continued research cooperation between fluids and plasticizers will be mutually profitable.
