Sherman, M.D Subject: Industrial Hygiene Evaluation of Material for Asbestos As requested by R. Roman, Safety Engineer at the Dearborn Engine Plant, a bulk bample of heat resistant board was analyzed for asbestoB content. It was found that there was two percent chrysotile contained in this product. Chrysotile is a form of asbestos and as such is subject to Company and OSHA regulations ' concerning asbestoB handling, monitoring employe exposure and waste disposal. Refer to OSHA 29CFR 1910.1001 and Industrial Relations Bulletin tfh for specific regulations. However, if any drilling or sawing ie ever required, employes must be protected from aBbestos dust. Vacuuming of any resultant waste is preferable to avoid creation of airborne asbestos fibers.. In addition, all wastes must be properly disposed of in sealed containers as per OSHA 29CFR 1910.1001(H)(2). Every effort should be extended to eliminate the use of asbestos base materials in the plant. Attached is a referenced vacuum unit approved for this type operation as well as a list of approved substitute materials which should be evaluated as possible replacements for the presently used material.
