L. KENNEDY CR&D - HASKELL LABORATORY TEXTILE FIBERS TYPAR CARPET BACKING Textile Fibers is using TYPAR spunbonded polypropylene for carpet backing and plans to introduce a brown colored TYPAR in the future. The colorant would be a cadmium based pigment which Textile Fibers purchase as a 50% pigment concentrate in polypropylene resin. At Textile Fibers' request, C&P developed an alternate colorant that could be used. The pigment content of the colorant consists ofi KROLOR Yellow KY-787 KROLOR Orange KO-789 Carbon Black 65% 30% 5% KROLOR pigments are lead chromate or lead chromate/molybdate pigments which have a surface coating (encapsulation) of silicate which is about 20% of the total pigment weight. The pigments would be purchased by Textile Fibers as a concentrate in polypro pylene resin. In this form, it is highly unlikely any airborne exposure to lead chromate would occur. In the final product, the pigment would be present at a level under 0.2% encased in the polypropylene fiber. Textile Fibers is interested in this colorant because of large potential cost savings but is concerned about the testing that would be necessary to qualify this material. Since you have previous experience with lead chromate pigments and are aware of their hazards, I request that you look at the implications of replacing cadmium pigments with lead chromate pigments in TYPAR and what type of tests Haskell would recommend for lead chromate pigments. Skin sensitation tests were suggested for cadmium pigments. Any guidance you can give on this matter will help in deter mining how to proceed with this program. You can contact me at 999-2711 if additional details are needed. /ilc rruff'^nt' M. W. OTT y'S m N36828.02 DUP050308381
