Dear Bill : In somewhat tardy reply to your letter of June 6 this is to let you know that your expense account went forward without delay. I have "been so busy with other things that I have been slow in my correspondence. I shall he in Washington in all probability on July 10, and possibly on July 11. I have tried to evade the business of appearing at the F.D.A. Hearings, In the belief that there was little of importance that would be brought up on the problem of lead and arsenic. As you are probably aware, Heyroth will be presenting information on DDT and a number of other organic insecticides, and he will be spending a considerable amount of time in Washington on that job. He will probably be there on the 11th or 12th, and maybe for a few days thereafter. I mention this because of his comment to me that you had suggested the advisability of his being in Washington. It is entirely possible that I can see you in Washington, but that should not deter you from coming on to Cincinnati if you find it desirable. I shall be here most of the time up to the 15th when I plan to go to Baton Rouge for several days. If you want to come before July 10 I shall be here from the 2nd on, and I will be happy to have you. As it happens, this business that I talked with you about, of getting together all of the toxicologic information on the petroleum com pounds in preparation of the presentation of the information in the Washington Hearings has come pretty much to a head. Heyroth is having a conference on the subject with the head man, W. D. Stevens of Socony Vacuum, next Thursday, I believe. It appears that this information will not have to be presented before late September or perhaps October, and therefore it is the hope of the people associated with Stevens that a brief can be prepared which will present some of the information, leaving the situation to be further developed later. I have suggested the desirability of the industry making it clear to the Food and Drug Administration, that this is a heroic problem, and that the industry will have to exert itself considerably to get the information that is required on many sides. I shall know in the next few days what will come of this situation, and it may be that we will be authorised to ask you to do the job. Certainly we cannot do it ourselves, and if you find It feasible to do it, it might be well worth while.
