The purpose of the monitoring was to determine employees exposures to asbestos during insulation removal activities on Columns CBD-102, CBD-103, and the 26" overhead vapor line on CBD-202. A sample result on M. Cantu exceeded the PEL TWA of 0.2 F/cc. This exposure was associated with a bag handling activity. A subsequent investigation and interview with the crew members revealed that this exposure could be the result of (1) several bags of ACM being left open before being taped closed. This practice is against procedure and should cease immediately and I would suggest a further investigation to identify the reason for this practice. (2) The possiblity also exist that this exposure could be the result of asbestos emissions due to the opening of the HEPA vacuum on several occasions throughout the shift to facilitate unplugging of the vacuum. The remaining personal and area air sampling results were within the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) permissible exposure limits. A review of the sampling data sheets indicated proper protective clothing and respiratory protection were worn by the employees during the monitoring period. A removal encapsulant (BWE-5000) was used in place of amended water for this removed project. According to the OSHA regulation you must communicate the report to the affected employees and I would encourage posting the report in an area accessible to other similar craft personnel for their review also. If you have any questions concerning this report, call me at 476-6917. WJS:kc Attachments cc: A1 Schmit - Shell Industrial Hygenist Jerry Stallings - Maintenance LAM 006324 BROWN <5cROOT U.S.A., INC.
