Subject: Asbestos Textile.Institute Meeting At the meeting of the Asbestos Textile Institute in Philadelphia last week two of the member companies reported that they had been approached b7 representatives froa the Public Health Service in regard to a study of asbestosis which they plan on beginning soon. The follow ing information was picked up at the meeting: (1) The-suryey is being made primarily to determine if there is , any relationship between asbestosis and cancer and will be on an International-scale* .. (2) Other things such as susceptibility, early diagnosis, stc will bs studied also* (3) The approach was made by a group of three men (two Phd*s. and one HD) through the State Dept* of Health. Dr* Lewis I. Crowley, Scientist Director Asst* Cheif Occupational Health, Research and Training Facility, F.H.S, ioiA Broadway, Cineianatti, Ohio, apparently heads the grouo. (i) Plans for the surrey only are being made at this time* They estimate that the survey will actually begin in approximately one year and that twelve to fifteen years will be required for completion* (5) Various committees such as clinical, radiological, etc will be set-up after selection is made from competent individuals of the medical profession. (6) Both of the companies (Johns Manvllle and H K. Porter) who had been approached were impressed by the high caliber of the men from the P.H.S. The 3oard of Governors approved a meeting of the technicians who collect and count the dust prior to the next meeting of the Institute, which is scheduled for March ?th and 10th, for the purpose of arriving at a standard procedure for the industry for collecting and counting dust particles* We are to be advised of the meeting date as soon as it is arranged. / / / Unitsd States Rubber Company Page 2 The ~oard also approved a reccsraendation hy the comittee for a meeting cf the corspar.y doctors at the next regular aeeting of the A.T.I. Dr. Kenneth d:i.th of veins K&avills was recoaaended to serve as temporary chaira*..; this group and Dr. Shaw, Secretary of the A.T.I., was to contact Dr. Sisir.h for an agenda for. the meeting. Dr. Shaw is to furnish the agenda to the various company doctors* .
