Dear Dr. Gardner: I have your letter of the 26th and am very sorry to hear of the guinea pig epidemic with which you have to contend. However, that is one of the risks of animal experi mentation, I suppose. Thank you for the information about the fused silica. We have been trying for five or six months to acquire an electrostatic M.S.A. dust collector but so far have only promises. When we get it we will be able to collect some of the material outside of the plant. There is no question as 'to the particle size - the material consists of spherical or dumbbell-shaped particles with the diameters only a small fraction of a micron. Also, by observation, it comes from the top of our high stack in the fora of a heavy white smoke which is carried by the wind and is visible in the air for a quarter of a mile or so. When the wind blows it down around the ground, it produces a definite impression of fog. I cannot see any possibility of its not"being inhaled in the lungs any person in an area where it reached the ground.
