However, if copper is continuously sub. jeered to temperatures approaching 400F, it will oxidize and become useless. For this reason it is customary to recommend the use of nickel-clad copper, nickel, or monel, for satisfactory service at 150C (302F) or higher. because of the lower current-carrying capacities of nickel-clod copper, nickel or monel os compared to copper, selection of a conductor of the proper size is extremely important. Nickel-clad copper is relatively new in the field of electrical conductors for high temperatures. Therefore, it is often overlooked- However, it stands next to copper in current-carrying capacity having better than 70e of the current conductivity of copper. It has been used successfully on appliations where the heot has been as high os 1000F. Pure nickel or manganese-nickel are most commonly used where resistance to high heot is importont. Their ability to carry electrical current is much less than that of either copper or nickel-clad copper. Monel has the lowest current-carrying rating of all the conductors mentioned. Sometimes it Is selected for its lower cost per pound as against nickel or niekel-ciod copper. The comparison of current-carrying capacities of copper, nickel, and monel, shown in the table obove may be found of value. Information on nickel-clad copper will be furnished on request. NOTE: The current-carrying capacities shown in the table above are based on o temperature ol 30 C. For higher temperatures see Correction Factors on Pages 66 and 67.
