Normandin January 16,1978 Page 2 Res Periodic? survey - Asbestos - Toledo Machining To comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Act, employees exposed to measurable amounts of asbestos must be provided with annual physical examinations. Detailed requirements for the examination are given in the OSHA General Industry Standards 29 CFR 1910.1001(j). The following employees should be given physical examinations: c. MeNeal - No. 8861 *./*r `r'r - No. 6537 ,2 * 7# While measurable concentrations of asbestos are common place, excessive concentrations are not, therefore wearing respirators need not be required of the employees. Respir ators should, however, be made available to the employees and their use should be encouraged. It was learned that workers were using compressed air to blow-off brake pads in an attempt to clean them. This is a poor practice that can cause a greater exposure to asbestos. The use of compressed air for this purpose mustnot be allowed. Asbestos should be cleaned with wet methods or with a vacuum cleaner to prevent additional exposure. The purchase of a special vacuum cleaner for asbestos is recommended. The high level of dust found on December 12 was due to an especially dirty shipment of brake pads from Chrysler Chemical Division. Normally, Chemical Division cleans the brake pads before shipping them. When this is done properly, asbestos levels at Toledo Machining should not be excessive. Industrial Hygiene has contacted Chemcial Division and they have suggested that in the future any excessively dusty shipments of brake pads should not be accepted but rather returned to them or the appropriate vendor for cleaning or replacement.
