Upper Darby, Penna. ` March 14, 1946 Dear Matt: This is to answer your letter of March 5th regarding the rerunning of leaded gasoline at this refinery. I obtained the following information from Mr. Carroll. They intend to rerun in their #15 still,which is the same still that had been used for rerun / tr; purposes before, 14,000 barrels of aviation base gasoline. This rerun was necessary due to the base gasoline arriving at this refinery from Port Arthur and containing 10 mms, of gum. For some reason which no one could explain this gasoline base stock also contained 0.22 cc's . of TEL per gallon. After the rerunning Gulf intends to add 2.33 cc's of TEL per gallon of aviation to bring this gasoline to 91.6 octane number. Although the lead content of this rerun gasoline was very low I instructed Mr. Carroll to mark this still the same as a leaded gasoline tank and for las to be notified when it was to be entered for any reason at which time the cleaning or entry would be dealt with wither the same precautions as is used in a leaded tank. I am not certain whether this precaution should be necessary and would welcome some information regarding the lead hazard that may be present. If we could get the information from Dr. Kehoe on the .samples of sludge sent in after this still had been; cleaned'the last 'time he might aXsothrowsome light-bn whether or not this still should be considered the same as a leaded gasoline tank.
