LESSON ONE-MODULE 2 MASTER CYLINDER BRAKE SYSTEM SERVICE Typical Master Cylinder If inspection and testing of the brake system reveal a damaged or malfunctioning master cylinder, the master cylinder should be replaced. Use the following steps as a general guideline for master cylinder removal: Disconnect the battery ground cable. Relieve the residual pressure in the brake booster assembly. Clean all the dirt from around the master cylinder. Unplug the electrical connector from the fluid level sensor, if equipped. Place a container under the master cylinder to catch any fluid that leaks from the outlet ports when the lines are disconnected. Use a flare-nut wrench to disconnect each brake line fitting from the master cylinder. Plug the end of each line as it is disconnected to keep dirt out of the line. Remove the master cylinder from the booster assembly. Clean the master cylinder and booster contact surfaces with a clean shop towel.
