Engineering 4 Mining Journal, Hew York, N.Y. discussed "The Changing World Picture In Lead Reserves11, o "Raw discoveries of lead ore bodies in various quarters of tha world give greater prominence to certain countries as potential major sources of lead", said R. H. Ramsey. "Other suppliers, long major sources of the metal, will decline in relative Importance." Mr. Ramsey showed that Canada, South America, Africa and Australia are expected to increase in relative Importance as lead pro- ducers. The United States and Europe are expeoted to decline somewhat in the percentage of world output they furnish, even though their ac tual production will increase. He estimated that this production can be obtained at a market price of around 13/ to 13/ per lb. of lead. Industry opinion in general seems to favor the lower figure. "Therefore." declared Borman R. Donald. Jr., geologist of the St. Joseph Lead Company, "It la becoming more and more necessary to apply geological acienoe to guide our search for lead." The role of the geologist seeking minerals Is complicated to s considerable extent by the face that ore bodies are found in more complex geological structures and may be present In a great variety of forms and chemical combinations. In 1952, this figure was 533Jf with a high In 191*8 of 6o.55f "The high primary lead prices bring out the heavy flow of scrap," said Mr. Foodlm, "which creates ampler sup plies to fill requirements and thus put a brake on primary lead prices* Conversely, low prloes for primary lead reduce the tonnage of scrap coming into the market." This Is due In part to the recent government deolslon to reactivate Its stockpiling program which had the effect of bringing domestlo consumers Into the market and also to the uptrend In the Jondon price which removed for the time being the pressure to sell foreign metal In the domestic market. "How much lead our government plans to buy for Its stockpile, what price It will pay and when lta purchase* will get under way, appear to be secrets that Washington has thus far refused to divulge," said Tr. "Knowing that there was an excesa supply of lead# domestle consumers bought far less than they aotually consumed with the result that their inventories were pared to the bone and are now at tha low est point that they have been since December, 1951/ and are equivalent to about three weeks' supply at their current rate of consumption, whereas the refined stocks In producers' hands# which are close to 100,000 tons, are at the highest point that they have been since 19lj9. "This situation has brought about Its own correctives. Dom estic mine output was cut last year by about twelve percent and the curtailment Is still lu effect. Consumers* Inventories reached so low a point, that they had to come Into the market to replenish them.* Dr. Zimmerman felt that the prospects for the lead market are better now than they were a few months ago. It la anticipated that lead consumption this year may be ten percent to fifteen percent below last year's total# but this would still constitute a good year for the Industry. It la doubtful whether the price will recede to the 12j^ level that prevailed earlier thla year simply because that prioe Is uneconomical for the doaestio lead producing industry. An outlook forecast for the storage battery Industry, the largest consumer of lead - }1 percent of the total lead consumed last year, was undertaken by Walton R. Smith, president. Basing hla estimates on a poll of the bat tery manufacturers and a statistical analysis of past performance, ha predicted that thero would be approximately one million more replace ment batteries manufactured In 195U than In 1953* based on an average battery life of twenty-six months. He also estimated that export ship ments of replacement batteries will be approximately five percent ahead of last year and that miscellaneous requirements, Including batteries for farm tractors, approximately five percent below last year. Indus trial batteries for material-handling equipment, telephones, etc., will be approximately fifteen percent below last year and government requirements approximately fifty percent below last year. "Require ments for original equipment batteries for new car production," said Hr. Smith, "should be approximately eighteen percent below last year but the lead required to make these batteries will not decline to this extent or approximately fifteen percent of all new cara manufactured during I95I4 will be equipped with twelve-volt batteries which require forty-five percent more lead than alx-volt batteries." "The use of lead for shielding In the X-ray region la 10 to 100 times as effective as equal weight of Iron and eren more effective than other materials," said Dr, Marvin Fox, chairman. Reactor Depart ment, Brookhaven National Laboratories, "As energies Increase to about 3 KEF, there Is very little distinction between lead and Iron," he said. Although the use of lead la more economical In the X-ray regions than at the higher energy levels, he pointed out that lead always has the advantage of greater density and hence la preferable where there are space limitations, such as In Atomic powered submarines or airplanes. Considering economic factors and comparing lead with lrcr, or concrete cost-wise as well as shieldlng-wlse, ho said, "at 0.2 MEV, lead Is about half the cost of Iron and about two times as costly as concrete for equivalent shielding. At 0,5 MEV, iron is about llO^ cheaper than lead and concrete about six times cheaper. At 3 MEV, lead Is twice as costly as Iron and concrete la about 15 times less expensive". According to Dr, Fox, one of the major uses of lead and cne that promises to be still greater In the future Is in the manufac ture of shipping and handling containers for radioisotopes and In lab oratories handling these materials. In the form of pipes It is widely used as heating colls and for conveyance of corrosive liquids, whilst In the form of sheets It is employed In the construction of plant such as acid chambers and towers and tank linings," Speaking of lead's use by the building trades. Hr, Cahn said, "It may be anticipated that the recent decision of the British government to modernise older dwellings as part of the post-war program will result In an extension of this field for a good sany years to come," He felt that an encouraging factor In the use of lead for water pipes may be looked for In the adoption of lead alloys giving much improved creep resistance and onabllng pipes of lighter weight to be used. Basing his observations on the experience of the Consolidated Edison Company, Mr. Hatcher felt there will be s con tinuing load growth which will necessitate the Installation of cable to accomodate such expansion. "Hew fast aluminum will be accepted Is difficult to predlot because of obvious eoononlo factors and present technical shortcomings which will have to be overcome." For example, he pointed out the present difficulties In volved In Installing aluminum sheath cable In exlatlng underground structures. In addition, there Is little assurance that the connec tion between joint sleeves and the aluminum sheath will remain perm anent and leak-proof. The poorer corrosion resistance of aluminum In underground use la a further disadvantage that requires the use of an additional protective sheet of polyethylene or neoprene type plastics. ** The meeting was concluded at a luncheon.
