Roberts Subject Asbestos Survey - Carpenter Shop Address BRT Date October 5, 1977 Per your request, an asbestos survey was conducted in the carpentet shop on July 25 and September 9, 1977. The purpose of this survey was to evaluate employee exposures while cutting asbestos containing materials and also to determine the efficiency of the ventilation system. Personal breathing zone samples were collected with MSA Model G pumps on standard 0.. 8y membrane filters mounted in an open face filter holder. Samples were counted using 430X phase contrast illumination. .Attached for your review are the results of these test. All. personal exposures were well below the OSHA stan dard of 2 fibers/cc, longer than 5 micrometers as outlined in 1910.1001 of the Federal Register. Even though employee exposures are below the regulation, there are other require ments that must be met to maintain compliance. Section 1910.1001(g) specifies the requirements.of caution signs and labels for areas handling asbestos. Since there is a potential for airborne asbestos concentration to exceed the standard in this location, caution signs are recommended. Caution labels should also be affixed to the bags used to discard dust and debris from the cyclone filter. These wastes should be handled as specified in Section (h) House keeping. The ventilation system was evaluated with MSA smoke tubes and an Alnor 6000P velometer. Collection efficiencies are well in excess of those specified in the NIOSH Industrial Ventilation Guidelines.
