Adams St., i fter a long winter it's good to get outdoors again-- /l to watch things grow, to build a base for that summer tan, to savor the sunshine and soft breezes of spring. And right now is a wonderful time to work outdoors. It's an ideal time to prepare for those soon-to-come days when you don't feel like working, when the sun is hot and you want a place for relaxation, for casual entertaining and for family activities. Below and on the next five pages are some excellent outdoor living ideas. They don't cost much, and they're real bargain answers to your desire for a healthy, happy summer outdoors. PICTURE-Build a summer outdoors... with a BOOK PATIO The attractive patio and fence below make outdoor living more enjoyable for Andy and Marie Solarski of Highland Park, 111. They designed and built patio and fence themselves, next to the front entry of their home. How can you follow the Solarskis' lead? For the floor, set common brick in two inches of sand, with divider strips of weather-treated wood. Build a T-ft. high fence of sections of knotty cedar treated with a coat of flat varnish; alternate with other sections of 4-ft.wide hardboard painted light turquoise or pink. The fence is supported, at bottom and ends, bv treated 4x4 wood posts set in cement. This is the right time to start building your summer outdoors. For help, see the lumber Build a summer outdoors... ivith THE SKY FORA CEILING The house on the corner of Tumbleweed Ave. and Dune Dr. in Las Vegas, Nev., was built in a large development. The improvements added by Paul and Katherine Ferguson now make it look like a custom home. They closed in the carport for a den and office, landscaped luxuriantly and added the beautiful outdoor living room you see on these pages. BB026 005(1 A n/^nr r Six-foot-high gate of redwood, painted white, blocks view from street bevond. Concrete walk is flanked bv planter on one side and Paul Ferguson's tool shed on the other. Unusual divider screen hides work area from patio. Screen has l!j.\3-in. birch frame stained charcoal: translucent sheet plastic resembling old glass stretches across frame. Low wall of planter forms a seat of 2x6 redwood boards, built by nailing perpendicular 2x6 boards to a base of 2x4's running horizontally. Planter has a metal lining of galvanized tin: Rear wall is concrete block with 4-ft. foundation. Overhead sunshelter is lxlJs-in. redwood strips, held by solid 2x6 redwood rafters, 2x4 bracing. The low "bench wall" of the planter is sand blasted for an aged look, stained lichen green. The sky's the limit! But when the sun is hot, strips of match-stick bamboo can be unfurled, on wires, over entire open section of patio. Ceiling over raised porch is Oriental stucco plaster. The Fergusons used 2x6 pine in an attractive eggcrate design, containing light fixtures and hi-fi speakers, to extend the roof.
