Call made on former 244 user in polyester hand lay-up work. 244 replaced fumed silica here about 18 months ago but became a victim six months ago of a snap response to some of the adverse newspaper health hazard articles. From my initial discussion with Beatty, it was evident that he wants to use it and prefers it over the silicas. Unfortunately, Randy, the president, is the guy who calls the shots and the one who made the decision to remove it. They were OSHA inspected about 2 months ago and were not cited, although they felt their housekeeping left much to be desired. Asked Bill if I could get an audience with Randy and we waited until he got out of his weekly Board of Direcotrs meeting. A straight facts, best effort to get our side of the story heard discussion was held with Randy. It didn't help much in that he also had read the Time article, but my admission that I agreed witii the story seemed to help our cause. The conditions were indeed hazardous, the company had been advised they had a problem, and nothing was done to correct it.I then told him that this was the reason that their was anOSHA regulation today, to prevent abuses and to be able to determine what conditions are hazardous and have to be corrected. Explained that the regulation exists to protect the worker from intolerable levels of exposure, and not to ban the material which has been deemed an essential material by OSHA and is so stated in the preamble to the regulation. Asked him if he felt that this one instance should be a black eye to all users, especially since Industrial's small usage of short-fiber material no where near approximated either the conditions, volume, or fiber length of the company in the Time article. Concluded our discussion by thanking Randy for giving me the chance to present the other side of the story, which was unfortunately not newsworthy and seldom heard. Left Dr. McDonald's article and a couple of other positive materials for him to read. Defense rests with Randy at least thinking that perhaps lie may have made a quick decision without all of the facts. JW Follow up by phone with Randy about March 1 and on next trip to Baton Rouge. Last year, as a result of one of the asbestos health publicity articles in the newspapers, Randy Peterson, Bill's boss and president of the company, told Bill to stop using 244 and switch back to Brand "X". Bill has been and still is a 244 proponent as he does feel as if Brand "X" is half as effective as our 244. Near the end of January, the writer had the chance to present our side of the story to Randy Peterson in an effort to see if he would reconsider the emotional move he had made. A complete health packet was left for his review and better understanding of the health question. According to Bill, the material that was left with Randy was looked at, but his position remains unchanged, i.e., he will not allow 244 to be used in their plant. Randy was out of the office while I was there so I left my card with a note thanking him for his past purchases and for allowing me to present our side of the health story, and also to please let me know if conditions ever changed that would allow 244 to be considered as a thix agent in their putties. In December we received a ten bag order, and late last month we Teceived another. John Beatty, who replaced his brother Bill here, isn't sure why the - --change of heart, other than it was always known we had the better product, especially in Derakane resins. They are still leary of the toxicology aspect of it, and what OSHA might do if they discovered they use it. I gave John a toxicology packet and our 244 brochure, along with our price list and my card.
