Gentlemen: We have an employe of our testing laboratory v/ho has been suffering for a year and one-half from a trouble which has been diagnosed as progressive muscular atrophy. He first reported to our hospital for treatment in February, 1S34 complaining that his legs felt cold. Later the muscles began to twitch and then it was noted that there was a shrinkage of the muscles. This became so pronounced that the man was obliged to walk with a cane. It is now affecting his arms and he com plains that he has the same feeling of numbness in his fingers that was present when the trouble first affected his legs. He has failed to respond to any sort of treatment and has been sent to numerous special ists in San Francisco. Today we have a report from another doctor whom the patient has consulted of his own accord in which this doctor gives an opinion that the employe's condition is the result of lead poisoning. So far as we can ascertain, the only possible contact with lead would be that which occurs when performing distillation tests on gasolines containing Ethyl Fluid. No other doctors have as yet confirmed this one doctor's opinion. On the contrary, we have had him specifically examined for lead poisoning by other doctors on previous occasions with negative reports.
