Zapp - Haskell Laboratory October 21, 1970 / t*. y ASBESTOS DUST On May 6 and 7, 1970, Haskell Laboratory sponsored a company-wide seminar to discuss the health effects of inhalation of asbestos and means of measuring and controlling the potential hasard. As a result of this meeting, certain agreements were made in regard to asbestos dust criteria, sampling techniques, and recommendations on the use of protective equipment. This information was transmitted to our Textile Fibers plants in a letter dated May 22, 1970, entitled, "Asbestos Dust Control." Along with this letter, we distributed a manual developed at the Old Hickory plant in November of 1969 which covered the subject of asbestos dust control in considerable depth. Because of the hazards of exposure to certain asbestos dust particles, manage** ment is concerned with the proper control of this environmental hasard. We have been (questioned by seme of our plants as to when an Engineering Standard will be written covering reccnaended asbestos dust criteria, controls, and protective measures. I have discussed this question with the chairmen or Standards Engineers of the Air Quality, Process Insulation, and Safety and Fire Protection Subcamoittees and discover that none of these consider asbestos control within the scope of their charter. It would seem that control of asbestos dust should be an item of high priority in the protection of the health and welfare of our employees. We, therefore, recommend that you review the charters of the various Standards Subcommittees and, if you feel as we do, that this subject be made an active item for 1971.
