During the shut-down and subsequent start-up procedures, a large quantity of scrubber water was utilized. This water was directed to the metals treatment unit for copper removal. This flowrate exceeded the capacity of the control unit and excessive copper discharge was detected by the unit's automated process copper analyzer. Production rates were cut back and with the reduced flowrates, copper control was reestablished. However, due to the retention time in the treatment equipment, a violation occurred for this 24-hour period. The following 24-hour composite confirmed copper discharge was in control. An engineering study is underway to investigate installation of a third parallel Lamella Settler to increase capacity to cope with such abnormal demand in the future.
