A, Costa Date: August 30, 1984 As a follow-up to our discussions, 1 am writing this memo to you to emphasize my concern that the talc application problem and excess moisture in the packaged bundles of shingles at Shreveport will not be solved. I did not get the impression that there was going to be sufficient aggressive action to install a proper talc applicator at Shreveport. I also do not have the feeling that there is enough concern so that the finished product festoon ahead of the shingle cutter will be lengthened, so that Shreveport will then have sufficient cooling and drying capacity. Without proper talc application mechanism or a sufficiently large festoon to allow proper cooling and drying, the talc transfer problems experienced at Shreveport will continue. I noted deficiencies in the water sprays in the cooling section. These were discussed with both you and Prank Wood. I am con cerned about the cone type sprays forming an uneven pattern across the sheet and the sprays in the first part of the.cooling section, which are just holes drilled in pipes, which have just streak pat terns on the sheet causing uneven cooling. Proper fan type sprays would do a lot better job. The best cooling is obtained when you have a thin application of water that is facing the atmosphere and is evaporating rapidly. The thick layer of water shown on the sheet actually may act somewhat as an insulator. If we are to make quality certain at Shreveport, we have to give the plant people the proper tools to do the job. led fnr W,Cc>5-hc. in hr s tfkz&'vce rvyv) WAC:mes fgp 9/83 BIRD 014390
