LEGAL & CORPORATE AFFAIRS * Historical material information was provided to the law firm of McGuire, Woods and Battle for asbestos litigation. * Assistance continued to be provided to the Lav Department regarding the past activities with nuclear material at the Bloomfield, NJ facility for the insurance litigation. In addition, significant preparation support was given for future depositions to be taken from various EA personnel for this same site. o Extensive preparatory work was done with F. Morgan's group for the "Law and the Environment" Seminar, scheduled for the fourth quarter. This seminar will provide an overview of important legal and environmental information of interest to Tony Massaro and his staff. o EA worked closely with Corporate Relations during the quarter on the planning, production and distribution of the Environmental Policy Brochure. Several meetings were held with Public Relations, Internal Communications and the Corporate Services Center to coordinate this major project. B. FINANCIAL SERVICES, INC. o No significant activity. C. FINANCE o No significant activity. D. BROADCASTING o Technical assistance was provided to Broadcasting personnel for conducting an indoor air quality study at WINS Radio in New York City. o Technical assistance was provided to KDKA-TV/Radio to resolve outstanding audit issues involving emergency response and fire protection. * Assistance was provided to Longines-Wittnauer Watch (LWW), Cayey, PR, by obtaining the adequate financial assurance and decommissioning plan necessary to satisfy the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements for renewing as well as increasing their nuclear license limits for the next five years. 3qtr92.mcl Technical assistance was provided to the Group (W) Headquarters Broadcasting facility regarding an asbestos assessment. ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS GROUP A meeting was held with four (4) product safety coordinators from the Electronic Systems Group to disucss the proposed product development of the Cleveland Naval Systems lithium battery. Strategy was developed to implement a product safety organization that will require 48 potential project reviews. Assistance was provided to the College Station, TX facility concerning the Continental Insurance inspection dealing with health, safety and ergonomic issues. A new MSDS and label for a two-component rubber compound for the Sunnyvale, CA Marine Division was prepared and approved. Industrial hygiene and safety audit follow-up activity was provided to the ESG Sunnyvale, CA plant to resolve some of their pending Environmental Affairs (EA) audit findings. Documentation provided by plant personnel following an EA audit at the Hunt Valley, MD facility was reviewed. All regulatory issues have been resolved from this audit. Work was initiated with the Naval Systems Division in Cleveland to host the EA Product Safety training seminar in the fourth quarter. The group has agreed to provide several speakers and to host a facility tour. Activity continued to assure regular communications with the Electronic Systems Group. We have regularly telefaxed major reports to their environmenntal people before issuing them to their higher management. Kip Keenan has been utilized many times during the quarter as a "sounding board" for new training ideas. A participation agreement was signed for the Shore Realty, NY site to implement remediation. Westinghouse will participate (using EA and ESG personnel) in the technical and executive committees because of our significant volume fraction. The technical committee has selected a consultant to perform the remedial design for the site. The project kick-off meeting was held with the consultant in early September. Remediation work continues at Sunnyvale, CA facility despite Westinghouse not agreeing to the consent decree. The work .mc2 B=* J * i.3 being performed under the 106 order. F. HUMAN RESOURCES & TOTAL QUALITY o Assistance continues to be provided to the project at AEG, Oakdale, PA in developing a joint safety program for WPQC and AEG. * A presentation, "Workers' Compensation and Environmental Affairs Issues," was given at the Workers' Compensation Seminar held at Baltimore, MD on September 21. Twenty-one participants vers in attendance. G. INDUSTRIES & CORPORATE RESOURCES [Si O0 o Corporate Safety conducted a product safety review for the proposed lithium battery to be used for laptop computers. i -- nl The product is being developed at the Science and Technology K3& Center. o Assistance was provided to the Portland, TN Challenger Electric facility on redesigning the ventilation system for the facility. * Assistance was provided to Challenger Headquarters, Malvern, PA, on reportable cumulative trauma and other injury cases on the OSHA 200 log. o Assistance was provided to WESCO on developing health and safety programs. * An IH&S audit was conducted on August 10-12 at the Thermo King facility in Minneapolis, MN. The following findings were noted: Hazard communication, chemical inventory and P- - - - '] labeling requirements need upgrading; confined space procedures and contractor safety programs were not developed; equipment such as the tube bender and the press brakes needs point-of-operation guarding; the emergency exit doors in the maintenance and stock room areas were blocked and needed better housekeeping. o A refund of $5,600 was received for the City Chemical, FL site based on paying for a de minimis buyout settlement. The refund was credited to the Oldsmar, FL facility who paid the buyout amount. o The third PRP assessment for remediation of the Andover, KN site was received and reviewed. The $8,600 assessment will be paid directly by Thermo King. * Seven man-days were spent providing hazardous materials evaluation services to STC Corporate Standards Department to 3qtr92.mc3
