Rogers SUBJECT: LIA Public Affairs Committee AUG 1 c 1I 'i The first meeting of the Lead Industries Association's Public Affairs Com mittee was held at the Cloud Club on Monday, August 9. Dr. Cole was on vacation. It was agreed that the meetings would be held approximately every two weeks with Rogers chairing the meetings. The following subjects were discussed: 1. Center for Science in the Public Interest -- Thompson explained that that this was a Nader-associated group doing an intensive investigation on lead in the environment. It was agreed that Rogers would meet with the group in Washington to obtain further information and offer assistance. He would then file report with LIA, possibly sending out a bulletin to members. 2. Science Writers Seminar -- Thompson described format of science writers seminar and explained that the first program would costmuch more than subsequent programs because of cost of preparing materials. Proposal will be submitted shortly. . ________________________ _ 3. Kimberley and Borcina reported on NPVLA meeting over companies producing higher than permitted_lead content interior paints. Rogers was instructed _to ask Cole for copy_af hi s. vd-sit--r Lobbyj nn and Tax Exemotions - - Kimberley said he had written Overton of American Mining Congress to get his opinion on lobbying activities. Thompson urged Kimberley to explore Overton proposal for a luncheon on lead in gasoline. Rogers said he would send Kimberley Bureau of National Affairs' booklet on lobbying and the law. 5. Rogers said he was having Cliff Guest check on EPA automobile hearings of July 27 and would have report shortly. 6. Thompson recommended supplement to "Load in the Atmosphere." It was agreed that Thompson would pull out Cole's earlier version of a supplement and review it again. 7. The childhood lead poisoning report by Hill and Knowlton is awaiting com ments from Cole. Borcina suggested that the next version of the pediatrics LIA-76253 2 facts booklet include a chart giving comparative poisoning data of lead poisonings versus all poisonings. In addition, it was agreed that Hill and Knowlton would frame a question to approach Dupont and Ethyl on available data on lead in dustfall0 _________________ It was reported that Cole and Lynam had visited Staten Island Zoo and found errors in analysis. A visit report has been submitted by Cole. Rogers was instructed to obtain copy of report from Cole and also ask that Hill and Knowlton receive copies of such reports and memoranda, at same time they are transmitted to Kimberley and Borciiic 9.
