Several determinations of air flow velocity and diroction were made in the employeso* breathing zones at tho chrome plating tanka. Thin was done on the platform and at floor lovol with and without tho operation of n nearby pedostal fan. Capture volocitioa of tho local exhaust ventilation synton at tho onds of tho plating tonka were found to be adoquato cithor with or without the fan opernting. They ohould remain 00 an long an tho fan 1 not diroctod at or over the top of any plating tank. The addition of the plastic opheroo to tho surface of the chromo plating tanks ohould also help prevent dleperoion of acid mint into the work atmosphere, ; Based on tho rooults of this investigation, no recommendations aro necessary under conditions existing at tho time of tho visit. Should there be any chongos in those conditions or if you dooiro it, a survey for chronic acid mist can be porformod. Hurnire ran to he away July 7 so arrangements wore made to make the investigation on July (i. The chrome plating eite waa viaitod end ooveral measurements made of the capture velocity of the local oxhauat ventilation system with and without the presence of a podestal fan. Several observations of air direction were made with smoke tubes while the fan wna operating. Ventilation ami air movement wore found to be satisfactory for removal of the chromic acid mist. The background of this situation Is about ns follows! Sometime last yoar the exhaust system was revamped and portions of it replaced. As warn woathor arrived tho employees on the second and third shifts began to complain of excessive amounts of chromic acid mist in the atmoshpero. Their criterion waa the brown stains appearing on a paper shoet used for recording which lay on a stand noar cno of tho thrso chromic acid tanka. As a result a litmus papor tcct waa undo of tho ntnosphoro during the third shift and these results sent to tho company industrial hygienist in Peoria, Illinois, Analysis indicated oxpoouroc slightly above tho T.ti.V. 7/hcn the pedestal fan is running. It was then decided to add plastic spheres to tho tanks containing chronic acid, Sinco this tino tho paper nentioned above has remained l'roe of brown otains and there have boon no noro complaints. Caterpillar Tractor Company Tfum loft off Lancaster Pilea at Truolctown at Edgooombe Steel sign) York to. Joseph Shilen, M.D., Director Bureau of Industrial Hygiene 830 employees York County Hlokey Industrial Nursing Consultant I wa3 ohallenged as I entered the plant premises by pickets but allowed to proceed when I explained I was a nurse from the Department of Health. C.I.O employees had gone on strike this morning. They are demanding a wage increase basing their demand on the argument that the wage scale in all Catepillar plants should be the same even though living costs in different areas vary. This plant makes replacement parts for traotors and is operating only one shift, with only a skeleton orew of maintenance personnel on the second and third shifts. Approximately 200 women, all offioe workora, are employed. Mrs. Ruth Keele and Mr. L. C. Allenbrand, general manager, met me in the lobby. I explained the purpose of my visit to Mr. Allenbrand and also the Bureau's servioea. He was given a oopy of "Know Your Bureau of Industrial Hygiene," After this, Mrs, Keele and I went to the health She has beon employed hero sinoe December 1953, Her previous experience in this fiold is limited to three months at York Corporation. She was in the Air Foroe Nurse Corps and received good experience in adminis tration there. Drs, R. D, and H. H. MoDougall visit the plant oaoh morning at 8i30. They are employed on a flat fee basis. Mr. Frank Nunon, safety and health director is administratively in charge. He was out of town on this date. A large suite of rooms has been provided. These include a waiting rocm, treatment and nurse's offioe, doctor's offioe, laboratory (one bed is in hero for ill employees), a physioal therapy room, X-ray and develop ing room, and two lavotories. The arrangement is not good and requires muoh walking whioh results in lost time and fatigue for Mrs. Keele. Complete preplaoement physioal examinations, including a urinalysis and chest X-ray are given. Vision tooting, using the Amerioan Optical Co mpany's roaohine, is done by the personnel offioe. If prescription lens for safety glasses are needed, the oompany payshalf the oost. An individual folder is kept on eaoh employee in a looked file. Mrs. Keele developed a cumulative reoord using a 5 x 8 oard. The daily log Repr action of an Oi.ymut MW $$$ No#) Street, Hafrishurg PA 17120-0CW t* Unreal & Museum Commiesioa -2- #6 is that sot up by tho Pooria offloo. Tho physioal examination form is thoiro also. There is a largo auditorium in tho building -which oould bo used for showing health films and for group talks, Mrs. Keels tiled to promote this bur Ur. Hunan did not approve. In oonsequenoe, all that is done in health teaching is that whioh the doctors and nurse do in contact with tho individual employees. Mrs. Keele ie kept very busy and does not have muoh opportunity with 850 employees and the task of taking and developing X-rays, giving diathermy and hydrotherapy treatments. She was urged to do all she oould in health supervision and teaching. She wants to have a literature rack in the waiting room. She has begun a draft of medical directives for the doctors approval and hopes to develop a manual. My suggestions inoludadi 1. A new Individual health and service reoord 2. A monthly report form 3. That she obtain as quickly as possible signed medioal directives 1. That trained first-aiders be designated for the seoond and third shifts and appropriate provision be made for them to reoord what they do and they be governed by the standing orders for first aiders givon in tho Red Cross First-Aid Textbook. Mrs. Keele was given the Bureau booklet, Conoepts of and Faotors Essen tial to an Adequate In-Plant Health Program, Sample Records, Manual Outline, and tho bibliography. The use of these materials and their purpose was explained, I am to return in the near future to meet Hr. Nunan. FCHiefh
