Dear Dr. Kehoe:
I am writing in regard to the lead poisoning case we spoke of on the phone recently, We have obtained a continuance of at least two weeks before this case will be heard.
I am sending you the records we have relating to
w^ has
been diagnosed to be suffering from lead poisoning. He has filed a claim
with The Industrial Commission of Ohio against illys Motors, Inc. alleging
that his lead poisoning was contracted from paint at Willy3 .
As you will glean from the records, Mu. ^ H ^ E f i r s t complained sometime in
1951 of certain symptoms. However, a lead poisoning diagnosis was not
rendered until 1959 despite various examinations.
has had contact with paint at Willys as a sprayer and as a wet
sander . A wet-sander waters the primer coat of paint as the vehicle bodies
come out of the drying oven. He then goes over the wet surface with fine
sandpaper.
.
In formulating your opinion, please accept the following facts as established:
1. There has been no instance of lead poisoning from paint at Willys since at least 1936 when Dr. Norris Gillette first had contact with the Company.
2. According to our records, Herbert-Schorndorfer and Glidden paint
companies were the only suppliers of paint containing lead with
which the. employee had contact. The employee worked with the
following paints:
,
Ferbert-Schorndorfer:
#673038, lead content - ,08k% #689338, lead content - none
#67360 1, lead content - .595$
(the above percentages are by volume and found in the drier).
Glidden: #GL-62728b , lead content - none

3 . The employee had contact with the following paint at the
following times:
18 months, 1947 and 1948,
8 months, 1949, and
22 months, 1950 to 1952, as a wet sander he contacted Ferbert #673601 with a lead content of .595$*
26 months, 1952-to 1954, spraying or sanding Ferbert #689338 (no lead) and #673038 (.084$ lead).
1 month, 1958, spraying GL-62728B which contained no lead.
4. The employee has not been exposed to lead in paint since May, 1954.
5. The report of Donald W. Rurasey, Industrial Hygienist, dated October 22, 1959, was made after his investigation of the premises. He states that, "Lead exposure of industrial hygiene significance was not found in any area in which the claimant worked."
6 . In 1959, the record discloses these urinalyses:
A. 5"13"59 by Irving R. Sherman, Ph. D. - 1188 meg./liter. (Toledo) n B. 5-18-59 Willys Diagnostic Clinic by Armin 3. Good, M.D.,
1148 mcg./liter. (Toledo)
C. 5~20-59 , by James S. 01ms, M.D., 1100 mcg./liter. (Toledo)
Whether these 3 tests are all the same test or 3 separate urinalyses is not clear
from the record. Dr. Good has moved to Ann Arbor. I talked with Irving Sherman, Ph. D., on the phone Monday evening, 1-23-61, and he felt that they were all one and the same test. Mr. Sherman felt that he was the only man in Toledo qualified to run such a test. I know that Dr. Good had him make at least one urinalysis.

Erom the facts above stated and from the information contained in the reports and other documents, we would appreciate your opinion as to whether, with reasonable medical certainty, the claimant's condition which was diagnosed as lead poisoning in 1959> as shown on the reports, resulted from exposure to paint at the Willys Motors, Inc. factory.
In addition, of course, we would like to have the reasons for your opinion.
As I mentioned before, we have a stay of 2 weeks. If it is convenient would you make me 3 copies of your response as well as the original. Please mail the records and your reply to me at the firm address on the letterhead, and submit the bill covering your fee and expenses to the same address. My phone number is CHEERY 1-3213.
