2 As I said, in the '30s, '40s and '50s there
3 was controversy as to whether there was or was not a
4 unique tumor called a mesothelioma.
5 Many of the leading pathologists in the
6 world felt there was not, and what people were
7 interpreting was a tumor that spread over the surface
8 of the chest or abdominal cavity was actually a
9 metastasis from either lung tumors or abdominal
10 tumors.
11 For example, ovarian tumor in women is known
12 to spread in a way identical with mesothelioma.
13 Wagner -- the other thing was that
14 mesothelioma was extraordinarily rare. Most
15 pathologists see one or two in their lifetime.
16 Wagner, in 1960, published a report of 33
17 cases of mesothelioma, which would exceed the lifetime
18 experience of a dozen or two pathologists.
19 Not only did he have this large number of
20 cases, but he could show a relationship in virtually
21 all of them to exposure to crocidolite asbestos, sort
