April 1, 1957 QUARTERLY REPORT OF THE SECRETARY January 1 to March 31 1957 The following report covers the highlights of Association activities during the first quarter of 1957* More detailed information on those activities t or others not enuneratod herein will be supplied on request. CEMERAI. 1. "Lead" - One issue of our publication "Lead" was published and mailed to our list of about JOjCOO users and prospective users of lead. L. 2. Research - The subcommittee of the Tochnical Steering Committee obtained proposals from three independent research organisations for a survey of industry research possibilities which will be submitted to the main committee with reooey- cendations shortly. 3. Cable Sheathing - The Cable Sheathing Task Croup arranged with a leading 0 manufacturer of extrusion presses to construct a press for experimental extrusion : of lead alloys. The experiments will be conducted by the press manufacturer with the technical assistance of our group. u. Annual Meeting - Arrangements were made for the Annual Meeting to be held on April lypy, at the Crake Hotel in Chicago, What is believed will be an unusually interesting progrea was developed and advance registrations indicate a good turn-out, I 5. A.I.M.E, - The Secretary attended the annual meeting of the American Institute of tiring, Metallurgical and Petroleun Enginoors. 6. Annual Review of lead - The annual review of lead, prepared by tho Secretary and appearing in the February issue of sAcginccring and Mining Journal,* waa reprinted and circulated to members, 7. Inquiries - Inquiries for Association literature and assistance are being received at an unprecedented rate probably as tho result of nore frequent publi cation of "Lead* and our new or expandod educational activities. 8. Miscellaneous - The usual routine statistical and other services were ocntlnued and the secretary continues to eerve on an Advisory Coomittes of the Bureau of the Census for metals. Ceramics - In the interest of promoting the use of lead glazes, speakers on medical and engineering health control have been secured for the forthcoming annual meeting of the American Ceramic Society at Dallas. (See pago 3), 12. Meetings - The cnnual Congress on Industrial Health of the American Medical .vosociation and the Greater Hew Icrk Safety Convention, in Los Angeles and Kow Tork respectively, were attended, as was a meeting of the Metropolitan Kow lark Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, 13. Bulletin -- Ctao Lead Hygiene and Safety Bulletin has been issued during the quarter. 1U, International Contacts - Much time end effort have been given to arranging contacts for Dr. W. . George, Chief Medical Officer of the Consolidated 7-irtw Proprietary, Ltd. of Australia, who arrived for a three-months tour of industrial and medical establishments in the 0.5.... and Canada, Speaking engagements were arranged for him at the forthcoming Industrial Health Conference In St. Louis and at the annual meeting of our Association in Chicago, 15. Cocaitteos - The health and safety director is currently a member of a com mittee of the National Safety Council twd chairman of committees of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, tbs American Industrial Hygiene Association and the American Standards Association. Two meetings of these committees, in Haw lork and Chicago, have been attended. 16. "Facts and Fallacies" - The demand for reprints of Dr. Johnstone's Tacts and fallacies of Klucbisa" has continued. It is new being used for instruction in three medical schools. 17. Visits - Nineteen member company plants and offices were visited and six consultations held with industrial physicians in Milwaukee, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Houston. Hose Builders Show - Ns exhibited at the Shew In connection with the annual ceetlng of the National Association of Home Builders in Chioago in January, Load pitching and sheet metal work wore featured. . 19. Newark College of Engineering - Two 3-hour lectures on load as an engineering material were presented Ooiore several hundred graduate student* at this Important school for the sixth successive year. 21. Plumbers* Text Book - Our text book on lead work for plunbers oontlnuea to sell consistently, with over 1*00 copios sold In this period, 22. Soldering Handbook - Our Solder Cocrdttee net with the American Voiding Society Committee and about 25 percent cf the material for the Soldering Handbook was approved for publication. Our Ceedttoe also net alone and now has another 50 percent of the material ready for final approval. The remainder is ncn-oontroverslal and should be completed shortly. 23. W.A.C.E, - The annual meeting of tho Rational Association of Corrosion Engi neers was attended by a staff member. CER.JCTC3 2A. It had exceptionally good reviews In the trade press and was the subject of an editorial In 1 Ceramic Industry." Over 5,200 copies have now boon distributed through cur regular mailing list and roquosts. 25. Advertising - Tho first two advertisements In our new campaign appeared la '"Ceramic Industry* and "Bulletin of the American Ceramic Society* In liarch. Two additional ads are ready for publication and two are la preparation. Members are being supplied vrlth reprints. 26. Research - .xmngenonts have been mada for a research grant to the School ox Ceramics at ."htgors end a research fellerrship at the Department of Ceramic Engin eering, University of Illinois. The fellowship at Illinois will start with tho new school year In September with emphasis on low temperature porcelain enamels. 27. American Ceramic Society - To dispel undue emphasis on the toxicity of lead, wo have arranged for two speakers at the annual meeting of the Ceramic Society who will discuss the medical and engineering phases of all the variety* of toxic materials handled by the ceramic industries, 'They are Rutherford T. A.C.S, New Tork Section - Tour Secretary, along with the chairman of our Ceramics Tccnnicd Committee rad a member of that Committee, attended a meeting of the Metropolitan New Tork Section of the American Cerardo Society, The ontire program of five papers was uevoted to low teeporaturs ceramics and the use of lead consequently was a principal tepio of conversation, Re are attempting to grt permission to use condensations of at least two of the papers as supplements to "Lead in the Cerando Industries," RED LEAP PAINTS 29. Advertising - The first ad in our new campaign directed toward painting highway structures with red lend paints, hut also embracing other types of steel structures, was prepared and will appear in the April and Uoy issues of "Engineering News Record."
