Last week Mr. Baldwin brought to the plant ear Ho. E-1216
which he picked up at Ambler Brothers, Philadelphia. The contents
were reputedly a sample of straight uncolored tetraethyl lead vdiich
one of their acquaintances claims he obtains fqfyLis racing cars or
boats, as the case may be. Ambler Brothers
hot disclose the
name of the person from whom the material ttuuschhained, nor the
original source. However, frexn conversation

is ejy understanding that ho has an indirect^ inference that the material
originated from the Eastman Kodak Company.. \i'his may' or may not be
true.

Analysis showed the material to hsyb-.a specific gravity of 1.625 at 200. , and its tetraethyl'lead content was 97,65$ by the iodine
4 \ 0\ titration method. Unquestionably., thejmateriai is commercial tetraethyl lead. The size of the s&Emle was approximately 250 cc.
There is one ptixsling detail with regard to this sample. Can Ho, E-1216 contained ESIYL Beddf-lujLd when shipped originally to Ambler Brothers. They report- that tha^an was washed out carefully with gasoline before transferring the special sample to it. Strangs to say, the sample was rather blue in color, approximately equal to the color strength of gasoline containing 0.3 to 0.4 grams of our ETHYL Blue dye per 100 gallons. The lead analysis shows that there could have been little contamination from the can itself, and this is further substantiated by the difference in color. This would indicate that the tetraethyl was distributed already dyed.
