Today's note pertains to recently initiated industry funded research program to better understand hazards and risks associated with benzene. The program has the cooperation and participation of a good portion of the medical community in Shanghai, China (including 26 hospitals) and includes the establishment of a new pathology laboratory in Shanghai. The study program includes consists of a disease progression study, a case control study, and a molecular epidemiology study. The molecular epidemiology study might be of special interest to you as it pertains to understanding biomarkers of benzene exposure. My colleague Patrick Beatty of ChevronTexaco will soon be contacting Bob Sonawane, Bill Farland, and Peter Preuss of the EPA in order to set up a briefing meeting this summer (hopefully early - possibly the 3rd week in June). The meeting would be for purposes of informing the Agency of this program and to answer questions. I am by no means an expert on who within the Agency would have an interest in this program outside of the names mentioned above, who I know would be interested from the perspective of benzene human health risk evaluation. My request to you is to identify individuals - including yourself - who might also have an interest, particularly from the perspective of our molecular epidemiology study. Please respond to myself, but also particularly to Patrick Beatty, so he can send a more functional note with respect to establishing a time, date and meeting location.
