Drake PAD-130-83 February 3, 1983 Analysis of Bishop Insulation Material A sample of insulation from the No. 11 boiler in Bishop was submitted by Mr. C.E. Gary for asbestos analysis. Onder Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) examina tion, this material appeared to be granular in nature, and by Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, contained major amounts of Si and Ca, along with minor amounts of Mg,K,Al, Mn,'Fe, and Zn. Asbestos, under SEM examination, would appear filamentous in nature and EDX analysis would show it to be primarily Mg, and Si. An X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) scan of this material shows that it is quite amorphous but does contain CaC03, Si02, and at least one other phase which cannot be identi fied. This material, since it contains small amounts of Mg, could contain small amounts of asbestos, but x-ray dif fraction would only detect amounts in excess of about 5%.
