W. E. Rinehart, Sc. D. Industrial Hygiene Surveys New Orleans June 28, 1968 1 have been looking over my notes on the initial survey of asbestos cutting in tbe Carpenter Shop. There is no question that a good part of the generated dust is not captured by present exhaust ventilation. Since the arguments against exposure to asbestos dust are so widely known and apparently not without some basis for con cern, I feel I must recommend a.more complete survey of this area, and there, may. eventually be for engineering control. With this in'mind,' X wonder if you could try to obtain some additional preliminary information for me. 1 would like to have specifications on the asbestos composition. This would include chemical identity, fibre length distribution, and information on binders and/or fillers. It may well he that Purchasing has or can easily obtain this information for you. The second'item relates to a closer analysis of the time spent cutting the asbestos in its various physical forma. You might consider the possibility of having the Shop Foreman or Group Leader keep some records on a day-to-day basis regarding tbe usage of the 3 saws for work with asbestos. As well as the amount of time spent, it would also be helpful to know what asbestos forms are being processed. Due to vacation, my report on the resurvey of the EDC area will be delayed until I return. 1 shall not plan a report on tbe Sodium Plant until the present survey is completed. - As of today I am still encouraged about tbe chances of my returning-to Houston on July 16. I will call you on the 15th to complete my plans. WER/gf Dictated but not read. cc: Mr. M. C. Hudgins Dr. George Roush W. E. Rinehart, Sc. D. ETH 002254
